CHARLOTTE – UNC Asheville's women's tennis sophomore Lize Alet Morkel has earned distinction on the Big South Conference All-Academic Team, the league announced Wednesday.

A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Morkel currently possesses a 4.0 grade-point average pursuing an undergraduate degree in mathematics. She has earned distinction on the Chancellor's List each of the past three semesters.

Morkel racked up six singles victories during the abbreviated 2020 season, including a 4-0 mark at the No. 2 draw. She also possessed a 5-3 doubles record with partner Rosie Dickson at No. 1 doubles.

Morkel earned back-to-back Big South Player of the Week nods, February 12 and 19, bringing her career total to four Player of the Week recognitions after earning it twice in her freshman campaign. She was also twice named the league's Freshman of the Week in 2019, giving her six weekly conference honors in less than two complete seasons.

The Big South recognized Morkel as its Freshman of the Year following the 2019 campaign, and she also was named First-Team in singles and Second-Team in doubles. She finished with a 15-2 singles record at the No. 1 draw, including a 7-2 mark in conference play; and went 12-4 in doubles, including 5-2 in league play.

She joins senior Emily Sidor, a two-time All-Academic Team selection, as members of the 2020 team to earn the honor.
