Bulldogs Fall in Tight Match at Lipscomb

NASHVILLE – The doubles point proved to be the deciding factor as UNC Asheville's men's tennis team fell to Lipscomb, 4-3, Friday night.
The Bisons (6-0) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the dual, taking the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
All of the top four singles matches went into three sets. Leo Bierbaum picked up the first point for the Bulldogs (2-2), taking down Lipscomb's Pedro Uribe at the No. 4 spot. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Bierbaum rallied for a 6-2 victory in the second set, then downed Uribe in the third set with a 6-1 result.
Charlie Morkel gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the dual after defeating Victor Chaw at No. 1 singles. Chaw won the first set, 6-4, but Morkel rebounded with a gutsy 7-5 victory in the second set. He finished with a resounding 6-0 result in the decisive third for the victory.
The Bisons would earn victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots to reclaim the lead, 3-2.
Reining Big South Conference Freshman of the Week Harry Thursfield battled Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto at No. 5, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to tie the dual, but Lipscomb would win the decisive singles match at the sixth spot.
"It was a tough loss today," head coach Tom Hand said. "They jumped all over us in the doubles point, but we had chances at every singles sport. The match was every bit as close as the score suggests. We can take some valuable lessons from this one."
The Bulldogs return to action in Nashville at 2 p.m. Saturday, when they take on Belmont.
