Dengokl Scores 1,000th Career Point as Bulldogs Fall to Lancers

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite a strong first half of play, UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to Longwood, 54-51, Tuesday night inside Kimmel Arena.

Redshirt senior Sonora Dengokl scored her 1,000th career point in the game. Dengokl is now the 21st Bulldog in UNC Asheville history to reach the career milestone. The Sumter, S.C. native is the first Bulldog to reach 1,000 career points since Khaila Webb did so on February 17, 2018.

Dengokl was one of three Bulldogs to score in double-digits in the loss to Longwood as Dengokl and Brooke Jordan-Brown each scored 12 to lead UNC Asheville. Nadiria Evans was the third Bulldog to reach double-digits as she scored 10. Jordan-Brown secured her sixth double-double of the season as the senior center also recorded 12 rebounds.  

The Bulldogs held the Lancers scoreless through the first three minutes of play and led 11-2 with just under four minutes left to play in the first quarter. UNC Asheville eventually pushed that lead to double-digits as they led 14-4 with just under two minutes to play. The Bulldogs ended the first 10 minutes of play with a 16-8 lead. Jordan-Brown scored led UNC Asheville with eight points and six rebounds in the. The Bulldogs corralled 16 rebounds in the first quarter with 10 of those coming on the offensive end of the floor.

UNC Asheville attempted to pull away in the second quarter as they were up 25-15 with just over six minutes left to play in the first half and then up 29-13 with 3:30 left to play. The Lancers began to chip away at that lead as they ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to get the deficit back to single digits with a score of 29-20.

The Bulldogs held their lead for much of the third quarter as UNC Asheville was up 38-30 at the third quarter media timeout with 4:23 left to play in the quarter. A 14-0 run by Longwood wiped out the Bulldogs lead and UNC Asheville found themselves down by six with just over a minute left to play in the third quarter. The Bulldogs ended the final minute of the quarter with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one with a score of 44-43 going into the fourth quarter of play.

The Bulldogs and the Lancers traded buckets for most of the fourth quarter as UNC Asheville looked to reclaim the leads. Dengokl hit two clutch free throws with just over six minutes left to play to give the Bulldogs a one point lead. A few seconds later Longwood hit a three-pointer to take the lead back. UNC Asheville kept the deficit close as they cut it to one once again with 4:31 left to play. The Lancers pushed their lead to three with a score of 54-51 and neither team could score over the final 3:38 of play as that was the score when the game ended.

  • UNC Asheville's bench scored 16 points while they held Longwood's bench to only two points.
