Bulldogs Host Winthrop to Open Big South Season at Home

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's tennis team will close out a three-match home stand and open Big South Conference play when it hosts Winthrop in a 1 p.m., Sunday, showdown at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The Bulldogs (5-5) opened their home stand with consecutive victories, taking down Tusculum, 7-0, Wednesday, and followed that up with a 5-2 performance against South Carolina State, Friday.
 
EARNING RECOGNITION
Two Bulldogs have earned the Big South Conference's Player of the Week Award so far this season. Leo Bierbaum earned the first of his career, January 29, for his play in the season's opening week. Charlie Morkel earned the first of his career as well, February 5, after the Bulldogs downed James Madison.

Harry Thursfield was named the conference's Freshman of the Week for his performance against James Madison.
 
LEADING THE WAY
Bierbaum sports a 6-3 record playing at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots, including a 3-0 mark playing at the No. 3 draw. Morkel and Thursfield each have five singles victories on the season.

Morkel has teamed up with Sirawit Daosaengsawang for a 2-0 record in doubles competition. Morkel leads the squad with four individual doubles wins, as he and Oli Nolan have a 2-3 record at the No. 1 spot.
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Winthrop is 2-8 on the season after taking down Wofford, 5-2, Friday afternoon on the road. The Eagles' other victory came in league play after dropping Hampton, 6-1, February 21.

Abhimanyu Vannemreddy leads with a 7-1 record playing in the top singles spot for Winthrop. Lluis Morales and Miha Velicki lead in doubles with a 6-4 record at the No. 1 draw.
