Asheville Wins ‘Battle of the Bulldogs’ on the Courts

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's tennis team continued its home stand with another victory, taking down South Carolina State, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Asheville (5-5) jumped out to the early lead after claiming the doubles point with the first two results. Charlie Morkel and Sirawit Daosaengsawang defeated Marcelo Rodriguez and Geraldo Arzaluz Bonifacio at the No. 2 draw, 6-2.
Finlay Ray McFadyen and Leo Bierbaum delivered the first point to the home team with a tightly-contested victory at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (7-4).
Bierbaum scored a decisive victory at the No. 3 spot, taking down Antoine Gbadoe, 6-0, 6-3, to put the Asheville Bulldogs up 2-0 in the dual. Morkel secured the next victory, dropping Aleksa Daskalovic, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1.
Oli Nolan defeated Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 draw to give the home team the victory. Daosaengsawang would go on to beat Omer Gorgun, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot to give Asheville its fifth team point.
The final two singles matches went three sets, but the visiting Bulldogs (1-4) took the final two points via third-set tiebreakers.
"I was pleased with the way we came out in the doubles," head coach Tom Hand said. "We managed to sneak that point and did a really good job of continuing the momentum into the singles."
Asheville wraps up its three-match home stand and opens Big South Conference play when it hosts Winthrop in a 1 p.m., Sunday, contest at the Asheville Racquet Club.
