Bulldogs Earn 5-2 Victory Against North Carolina Central in Season Opener

GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's tennis team opened its season on the right foot, taking care of North Carolina Central, 5-2, Saturday afternoon on the home courts of East Carolina.
The Bulldogs (1-0) started off the dual match strong, securing victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the first point of the day. Leo Bierbaum and Harry Thursfield took down Christos Dagklis and Thanos Spyropoulos of the Eagles, 6-4, at No. 1.
Not long after, Sirawit Daosaengsawang and Edward Colclough playing at No. 2 earned a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot.
As the dual transitioned into singles play, the Bulldogs continued to build on their lead. Thursfield earned the team's second point of the match after Dagklis retired. Thursfield had won the first set, 7-5, and was leading the second 3-0. Daosaengsawang took down Amit Baran, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, at No. 2 and gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles took the point at No. 1, but Bierbaum delivered the team victory with an emphatic 6-2, 6-0 win against Sebastian Bromley at No. 4. Finlay Ray McFadyen capped the scoring for the Dogs with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the sixth hole.
"Always nice to start the season with a win," head coach Tom Hand said. "The guys fought hard and we got some glimpse of what we can do as the year progresses."
The Bulldogs get right back to business when they take on the host East Carolina Pirates in a dual set for noon, Sunday.
