01.26.2020 | Men's Tennis

GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's tennis team closed out its opening weekend of competition by taking on the Pirates of East Carolina, ultimately falling to the home team, 6-1, Sunday afternoon inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs (1-1) fell behind as the Pirates took the first point of the dual with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Leo Bierbaum and Harry Thursfield playing in the No. 2 hole did not finish their match, though they were locked in a tight battle, trailing 5-4, with the Pirates' Javier Renomes and Wisse Jonker.

The Pirates took the first two points of singles competition, as Charlie Morkel fell to the 103rd-ranked singles player, Diogo Marques, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. The Pirates also earned a victory at the No. 2 spot.

Bierbaum earned the Bulldogs' lone point in the match, winning two tightly-contested sets, 7-5, 7-5, against Simon Labbe in the No. 3 spot.

Quinn Fender, playing at No. 6 singles, put up a strong fight against ECU's Federico Masetti, winning the first set, 7-5. Masetti came back to win the second set, and took the final point of the match, winning the tiebreaker, 10-5.

"Not our best showing today, and ECU made us pay for it," head coach Tom Hand said. "They're a good team and they have given us plenty of things to look at during practice next week."

The Bulldogs are set to hold their home opener against James Madison, Saturday, February 1, at the Asheville Racquet Club. Play is set to begin at 3 p.m.
