Bulldogs Split Matches in Second Day of UNC Asheville Invitational

09.07.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's volleyball team opened the second day of its home event with a 3-1 victory against North Carolina A&T, but fell in the nightcap, 3-0, to Dartmouth, Saturday at the Justice Center.

In the first match, senior Julia Borges led the way with 12 kills and 18 digs, both of which were tops on the team. Senior Ansley Rooks also had big moments, collecting 11 kills and 12 digs, while Molly Hackett contributed 11 kills and nine digs.

As was the case as the night before, the Bulldogs minimized errors on the attack, having half as many as the Aggies. Much of that could be attributed to Grace Volk and Kailey Hackett continuing to set their teammates up for success, as they combined for 41 assists, with 27 coming from Volk.

The Bulldogs had chances in the first two sets against Dartmouth, often trading point-for-point in tightly-contested sets, but the Big Green were ultimately able to prevail in the event's final match.

Borges and Julia Loveday were both named to the All-Tournament Team in a vote of the coaches. In three matches, Borges finished with 25 kills, 38 digs and nine total blocks, while Loveday had 15 kills, 12 digs and five total blocks.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T SET-BY-SET

SET 1: BULLDOGS WIN 25-13: The Aggies took the early 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs jumped back into the match with a five-point run spearheaded by a kill from Ansley Rooks. After NC A&T narrowed the lead to one, the Bulldogs ripped off seven-straight points, including back-to-back kills by Molly Hackett, that brought the score to 13-5. The Bulldogs wouldn't look back the rest of the way, and Hackett ended things with her fifth kill of the set.

SET 2: BULLDOGS WIN 25-14: The second set started off as a back-and-forth affair, with neither team distancing itself until a three-point run by the Bulldogs – started by back-to-back kills from Rooks and Julia Borges – gave UNC Asheville a 10-7. The Aggies cut it to a two-point lead, but the Bulldog reeled off four-straight points that included kills by Molly Hackett and Cecilia Stack. With the score at 15-10, the Bulldogs would score 10 of the next 14 points to secure a 2-0 lead in the match.

SET 3: AGGIES WIN 25-20: NC A&T looked like a completely different squad in the third set, roaring out to a 7-1 lead. With the Aggies leading 19-13, UNC Asheville took a timeout, and the momentum seemed to shift, as the Bulldogs rattled off five-straight points, highlighted by three service aces from Molly Hackett. But that's as close at the Bulldogs would get, as the Aggies scored six of the next eight to secure the set.

SET 4: BULLDOGS WIN 25-15: The fourth set played out almost identically to the second set, as both teams traded blows in the early stages before the Bulldogs would eventually pull away. Rooks played a huge role in the Bulldogs separating themselves, recording four kills in an 11-3 run for the home team. The Bulldogs remained in control the rest of the way and Julia Loveday capped the match with seventh kill of the match.

DARTMOUTH SET-BY-SET

SET 1: DARTMOUTH WINS 25-22: The opening to the final match of the event was close from the get-go, with neither team able to separate itself, and at times, trading blows on every other point. The break for the Big Green came on a four-point run to go ahead 20-15. Borges ended the run with a kill, but after a Dartmouth error, the Big Green scored three more in-a-row and would weather a four-point Bulldog run to take set one.

SET 2: DARMOUTH WINS 25-19: The Bulldogs started off on fire in the second set, as Loveday opened with two kills and Borges and Rooks had one to open a 4-0 advantage. Dartmouth responded with four straight, and the teams would again go blow-for-blow, before another four-point run put Dartmouth up 21-17. A kill from Rooks ended the run, but the Big Green secured four of the next five points and a 2-0 advantage.

SET 3: DARTMOUTH WINS 25-7: Dartmouth came out of the gate quickly, and despite kills from Borges and Grace Volk in the early going, the Bulldogs had trouble keeping up, and the Big Green ended the event with the victory.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will take a couple of days to rest and recover before welcoming South Carolina State to town in a 6 p.m., Tuesday, contest at the Justice Center.

FROM HEAD COACH FREDERICO SANTOS
"I think it was a great weekend. Obviously, the last match is what is on my team's mind. I think the team wants and knows they can perform a lot better than that. In a way, this is a good working point for next week. Next week, we get back at it with another three matches and one at home, and we want to be ready for those matches: ready mentally, which I think was a huge factor in the match tonight. I don't think we were mentally prepared enough walking in. It can be only natural, but we want to do better and they want to do better because this our house."
