Bulldogs Close Out Home Stand with Sweep of South Carolina State

09.10.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's volleyball team put a cap on its four-match home stand with a 3-0 victory against South Carolina State, Tuesday evening, at the Justice Center.

The offensive attack was balanced, as five different players finished with five or more kills, highlighted by 10 from Julia Borges. The senior did a little bit of everything, collecting nine digs, four total blocks, three service aces and a kill.

Junior Cecilia Stack had an incredibly efficient night, recording eight kills on nine attacks for an .889 attack percentage. Julia Loveday (7), Molly Hackett (6) and Ansley Rooks (5) all figured into the scoring throughout the night as well.

That quintet was setup throughout the night by Grace Volk and Kailey Hackett, who combined for 32 assists. As a team, UNC Asheville (4-3) had 11 more kills, 10 more assists and 17 more points than South Carolina State (0-8).

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-18: In total, the Bulldogs recorded 12 kills by six different players during the first let, led by four apiece from Julia Borges and Molly Hackett. Five of those kills came in the first 10 points as the Bulldogs opened up a 7-3 lead. South Carolina State narrowed the lead to three, 11-8, before a kill by Ansley Rooks sparked an 8-1 run. Two kills by Borges and one by Hackett helped the Bulldogs maintain the lead, and they would take set point on a South Carolina State service error.

SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 25-14: South Carolina State had a one-point lead in the early going before Rooks started another run with a kill, this time a 6-0 run to go ahead 9-4. South Carolina State hung tough, narrowing the gap to one at 11-10, but back-to-back kills by Julia Loveday rejuvenated the Bulldogs and they were able to put distance between themselves and South Carolina State and ultimately take a 2-0 lead in the match.

SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-17: The Bulldogs' first seven points of the final set came via the kill (5) or service ace (2). As in the second set, South Carolina State did not go away quietly, taking a 9-8 lead on a service ace. From that point, UNC Asheville went on a 6-1 run to regain control, with kills by Rooks and Borges. Borges helped increase the distance with a kill followed by back-to-back services aces to increase the score to 21-13. The two teams would trade points down the stretch and UNC Asheville would emerge victorious.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will travel to Statesboro, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Southern Tournament. They'll face the host Eagles at 11 a.m., Friday, and well return to court for a 10 a.m., Saturday, matchup against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

FROM HEAD COACH FREDERICO SANTOS
On rebounding from Saturday's defeat:
"I think it's very important. It's important for the players because you fall off the horse, and you're a little intimidated to get back on. I think that showed in the beginning of the match. We were a little tense, but once we got back on the horse and we knew what we were doing, everything was fine."

On the match providing confidence for the weekend ahead:
"I think the matches this weekend will be great because we will be pushed. We need to be pushed going into conference play. It will be good to travel away to play outside of our home. We have a great deal of comfort playing here, but we want to play outside of our just to create conditions where we can't hear, which is good for them. It's good for their mental toughness. I look forward to this weekend's matches and we'll see what happens."
