Bulldogs Have Strong Doubles Showing in First Event of Fall Slate

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's women's tennis team took to the courts for the first time during the fall season and put forth a strong showing at the Western Carolina Invitational over the weekend.
Competition started Saturday, as the Bulldogs handled USC Upstate and Tusculum in doubles play, sweeping all six pairings they competed in. Freshman Ami Grace Dougah competed at the No. 1 spot in both matches, scoring a victory against USC Upstate with Lize Alet Morkel and against Tusculum with Brianna Taranto.
The Bulldogs made quick work in their doubles matches for the most part, with the only tightly-contested match coming at No. 2 against Tusculum, as Morkel and Taylor Love sneaked by with a 7-6 victory.
Sunday, the Bulldogs faced off in singles competition against USC Upstate and Tusculum, with the Bulldogs taking four-of-five from Upstate. The Spartans only had five available players, so the sixth spot was conceded. Dougah, Emily Sidor, Taranto and Anastasia Horvat all picked up victories against the Spartans.
Against Tusculum, it was much closer. Tusculum secured Nos. 1-3 in singles play, while Love, Taranto and Horvat picked up victories in No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
The Bulldogs also played in two doubles matches against the host Catamounts, but fell in both.
The Bulldogs will return to action when they travel to Statesboro, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Southern Invitational, Oct. 11-13.
