Bulldog Volleyball Completes Day Two at Georgia Tech Invitational
08.31.2019 | Women's Volleyball
ATLANTA – Despite a valiant comeback effort against Long Beach State and three close sets to host Georgia Tech, UNC Asheville's volleyball team fell in both its matches, Saturday, at O'Keefe Gymnasium.
The first match of the day was a barn burner between the Bulldogs and Long Beach State that went the distance, as the Beach picked up the five-set victory (22-25, 27-25, 25-12, 20-25, 15-12).
Three players recorded double-doubles against the Beach, led by 18 kills and 12 digs from senior Julia Borges. Sophomore Molly Hackett also had a big morning, finishing second with 12 kills and 13 digs, while senior Ansley Rooks posted 11 kills and 13 digs.
Sophomore Grace Volk almost made it four with double-doubles, as she led the squad with 27 assists and came up with nine digs on the defensive end. Kasey West led the Bulldogs with 20 digs and contributed four assists while Kailey Hackett notched 16 assists and five digs.
After getting the afternoon to rest up, the Bulldogs took the court for the nightcap against the host Yellow Jackets. After holding a seven-point lead in the second set, a stoppage in play for an official review derailed the Bulldogs' momentum, allowing Georgia Tech to take a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets secured the third set and took the match 25-17, 25-22, 25-21.
Molly Hackett led the way offensively against Georgia Tech with 10 kills to go along with four digs, while Rooks and Borges recorded eight kills apiece and combined for 15 digs. Volk again led the way with 18 assists, while Kailey Hackett contributed 12.
For her efforts over the two-day event, Borges was named to the All-Tournament Team.
"It was a fantastic weekend for us," head coach Frederico Santos said. "Our team was able to compete at a high level against two top teams in the country, fighting point-for-point with them. It's a great point for us to work from.
"We will get in the gym, keep working hard and, more importantly, grow together as a team."
The Bulldogs will return to action next weekend when they host the UNC Asheville Invitational at the Justice Center, Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will start competition against Eastern Kentucky 6:30 p.m., Friday, and will follow with two matches Saturday, against North Carolina A&T at 12:30 p.m. and Dartmouth at 6:30 p.m.

LONG BEACH STATE SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-22: The star of the first set for the Bulldogs was senior Julia Borges, who was on fire on the offensive end with six kills in the set. After some back and forth in the early going, the Bulldogs started to build a bit of a lead about halfway through the set, going ahead by five, 16-11. But Long Beach State would secure six of the next seven points to bring the set back to a nail-biter. Clinging to a 23-22 lead, the Bulldogs took the final two points on attack errors by the Beach to secure a 1-0 lead in the match.
SET 2, BEACH WINS 27-25: The second set turned into an incredibly tense, back-and-forth affair where the largest lead the entire set was four, when the Beach held a 19-15 lead. From that point, the Bulldogs brought the score to within one on three-straight kills, including one from Julia Loveday and two from Molly Hackett. After trailing 22-20, the Bulldogs reeled off three-straight points, with a kill by Hackett, one by Cecilia Stack and an attack error from the Beach. UNC Asheville had two opportunities to claim set point, but the Beach rebounded and scored three points in a row to close it out.
SET 3, BEACH WINS 25-12: The wind came out of the sails of the Bulldogs a little bit after allowing Long Beach State back into the match with a second-set victory. The Beach exploded out of the gate and built a 21-5 lead. The Bulldogs did show some fight to get back into it late. After a bad set by the Beach, Grace Volk subbed back into the match and added two points on a service ace and a kill to get the Bulldogs into double digits, but the Beach took the third set.
SET 4, BULLDOGS WIN 25-20: The fourth set was all about hitting the reset button and changing the mindset for the Bulldogs. The lead changed six times in the set, as the majority of the fourth set went back-and-forth. Senior Ansley Rooks recorded a kill to put the Bulldogs up, 18-17, and they never looked back from that point. Loveday recorded two kills down the stretch and Borges put away three kills and capped the set with a service ace to even up the match.
SET 5, BEACH WINS 15-12: A match this wild deserved a decisive fifth set, and that's exactly what it got. It started off close, as the set was tied six different times in the early going. The Bulldogs held the lead, 7-6, but the Beach reeled off four straight and put themselves in the driver seat. The Beach had set point at 14-10, but Rooks made sure the Bulldogs didn't go out quietly, recording a kill, followed by another Bulldog point on an attacking error, but the Beach would secure the match on the ensuing point.

GEORGIA TECH SET-BY-SET
SET 1, YELLOW JACKETS WIN 25-17: Early on, Georgia Tech scored a four-point run to take a 5-2 lead, but the Bulldogs would exchange blows from there and keep it close. Another four-point run by GT later in the set gave the hosts a six-point lead, 18-12. Despite two kills from Rooks and one from Borges down the stretch, the Yellow Jackets snagged the first point of the match.
SET 2, YELLOW JACKETS WIN 25-22: The Bulldogs rebounded nicely, scoring eight of the first 11 points of the set, highlighted by two kills and a service ace from Molly Hackett. After two straight GT points narrowed UNC Asheville's lead to 12-9, the Bulldogs ripped off four-straight points to take a 16-9 lead before a Yellow Jackett protest put a halt to the action. After play resumed, the Yellow Jackets secured seven of the next eight points to tie the match at 17 apiece. Despite kills from Kailey Hackett, Borges and Loveday down the stretch, the home team took a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3, YELLOW JACKETS WIN 25-21: Georgia Tech roared out of the gates with a victory in sight, taking the first six points of the set. Borges put a halt to the momentum with two kills and an ace to help the Bulldogs secure three of the next four points. After GT upped the lead back to five, Kasey West narrowed the gap with consecutive service aces. The Bulldogs cut the lead to one, 14-13, with two kills from Molly Hackett and a GT attack error, but the Yellow Jackets responded by taking four of the next five points. The Bulldogs cut it to a three-point deficit on three more occasions, but the hosts walked away victorious.
