Bulldogs Open 2019 Season with Sweep of Southern

08.30.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ATLANTA – After scoring seven-straight points to secure a first-set victory, UNC Asheville's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) victory against Southern University to open its 2019 season.

Senior Ansley Rooks led the charge offensively with 10 kills, while also coming up big on the defensive end with nine digs and three block assists.

Sophomore Grace Volk and senior Kailey Hackett each helped keep the offense humming from the setter position, as both reached double digits in assists, notching 10 and 12, respectively.

Senior Julia Borges did a little bit of everything, leading the team with 11 digs and finishing second with five kills, while contributing a pair of block assists.

"This was a good test for us today and our team was committed to this match," head coach Frederico Santos said. "We were determined at the end of Set One, scoring seven straight points to come from behind for the win.

"From there we were able to put pressure on our opponent and keep them out of their system."

The Bulldogs return to the court, Saturday, for two matches, beginning with Long Beach State at 10 a.m. They will close out their stay at the Georgia Tech Invitational with a bout against the host Yellow Jackets set for 7 p.m.

SET-BY-SET

SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-23: The Bulldogs' first set of the season started off as a close affair, as they were never able to put much distance between themselves and the Jaguars in the early going. The largest the lead for UNC Asheville ever got was four, at 10-7, but Southern tied the score four times before eventually taking the lead, 16-15. From that point, the Jaguars built a 23-18 advantage. The Bulldogs did not flinch, however, and reeled off seven straight points to take the first set. Ansley Rooks and Julia Loveday had block assists on the 20th and 24th points, and each also had a kill during the run.

SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: The Bulldogs came roaring out of the gate in the second set after the thrilling comeback just moments earlier. They built the lead up to 16-6 after four consecutive errors from the Jaguars. After two points from the Jaguars, the Bulldogs scored four-straight, including a kill by Molly Hackett and a service ace from Loveday. Despite a late run from Southern, UNC Asheville closed it out to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-17: The third set was back-and-forth for much of the early going. Southern claimed the lead three times early on, with the last lead it held being 9-8. From that point, the Bulldogs ripped off nine-straight points, highlighted by three-consecutive kills by Julia Borges and a block by Borges and Loveday to cap the run. After exchanging blows, the Bulldogs put together a four-point run to go ahead 22-14, and would put the match away with a service ace from Rooks.
