Bulldogs Drop Series Finale at High Point

04.29.2019 | Baseball

HIGH POINT, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball dropped the series finale to High Point, 11-3, on Monday, April 29, at Williard Stadium.

The game started with High Point (20-19, 13-8 Big South) plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 5-0 lead over UNC Asheville (14-29, 8-13 Big South).

The Bulldogs responded to the bottom of the first inning for High Point with a run of their own in the top of the second. Brandon Lankford got things going in the frame for the Bulldogs when he singled through the left side. A couple of batters later, Lankford was out at second, but Carmine Pagano was able to get on base via an error. Pagano then found his way home on a dropped fly ball to set the score at 5-1 in High Point's favor.

High Point would score five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead 10-1, but UNC Asheville scored two of the last three runs in the game to set the final score at 11-3.

Jake Madole captured his sixth home run of the season with a solo shot in the top of the eighth inning. The Bulldogs would then add another run in the top of the ninth inning.

PJ Heintz started things off for UNC Asheville in the top of the ninth inning by doubling to center field. He was then moved over to third a little while later on a wild pitch. Anthony Cuozzi took advantage with his double to right-center field bringing home Heintz.

Heintz, Cuozzi and Lankford all finished the Bulldog loss with two hits. High Point narrowly out-hit the Bulldogs, 13-9, overall.

Travis Holt and AJ Holcomb led the Panthers with three hits each.

UNC Asheville starting pitcher Jacob Edwards suffered the loss on the hill. He pitched the first five innings, fanning four. Andrew Gottfried pitched the first seven innings for High Point to earn the win. He struck out four.

The Bulldogs will next welcome ETSU to Greenwood Field for their sixth game in the last eight days at 6 p.m. on April 30. The game will be streamed live on BSN on ESPN+.
