Late Bulldog Rally Comes Up Just Short in Narrow Home Loss to ETSU

04.30.2019 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville scored five runs over the final two innings, but the rally was stopped just short in ETSU's narrow 10-8 victory over the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field on Tuesday, April 30, 2019.

ETSU scored the first six runs of the game before UNC Asheville pulled with three runs with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

The inning started with Jake Madole being walked before Brandon Lankford doubled to bring Madole home. After a Danny Wilson fly out, Lankford was then moved to third. PJ Heintz made sure to bring him home next with his sacrifice fly giving the Bulldogs their second run of the game.

The Bulldogs would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The inning started with Kole Harris being walked. He was then moved over to scoring position on a balk.

Anthony Cuozzi singled next to give the Bulldogs runners at the corners. Greg Gasparro hit a sacrifice fly next to bring in Harris.

ETSU would lead 10-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but UNC Asheville would go on to manufacture four runs in the inning to pull within three at 10-7.

The Bulldogs looked to get even closer in the bottom of the ninth, but unfortunately they could only scratch across one run to leave the Bucs with a narrow two-run win.

ETSU finished with a 16-4 advantage in hits over the Bulldogs in the game with Madole, Lankford, Harris and Cuozzi capturing single hits on the day for UNC Asheville. Both Madole and Lankford scored two runs, while Heintz had two RBIs.

Noah Hill and Tyler Cox led ETSU in the game with three hits each.

UNC Asheville starter Jordan Carr (3-8) suffered the loss on the hill for the Bulldogs. He was one of eight Bulldog pitchers used in the game.

ETSU starter Colby Stuart (3-2) earned the win in pitching the first six innings. Daulton Montagna pitched the final inning to secure his second save of the season for the Bucs.

UNC Asheville now has well over a week off to focus on exams. The Bulldogs will next welcome Radford to Greenwood Field for a three-game league series May 10-12.
