BULLDOG BITES

Freshman Standout

For the third time this season, UNC Asheville freshman Lize Alet Morkel has received a weekly award from the Big South Conference with her honoring as Women's Tennis Player of the Week by the league office on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

A mid-year enrollee, Morkel was first named conference Player of the Week on Jan. 23, 2019. She was chosen as the Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week on Feb. 6, 2019.

In singles on the 2019 spring season, Morkel is an impressive 10-2 overall. She has played all of her matches at No. 1 singles. Morkel also has a team-best nine wins in doubles.

First Time in 10 Years

The Bulldogs defeated Big South Conference rival Charleston Southern for the first time since the 2009 season with a 4-3 victory on March 13, 2019 to pick up their first conference win of the season. The Buccaneers had won nine straight matchups between the two programs before the Bulldogs victory.

The Bulldogs took the doubles point on the heels of an amazing comeback effort by Kylee Shipley and Lauren Watson-Steele at No. 3. The duo found themselves in a 4-1 hole before fighting to erase the deficit and pick up a 6-4 victory.

UNC Asheville had to fight for every point versus the Buccaneers, who answered back with two quick singles victory to erase the Bulldogs lead. Lize Alet Morkel tied the match for the Bulldogs with a win at No. 1.

Shipley, at No. 5, and Taylor Love, at No. 3, each had to fight through three back and forth sets to claim the essential third and fourth wins for the Bulldogs to clinch the 4-3 victory.
