Morkel Named Big South Freshman of the Year; Sidor and Love Also Receive Big South Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three members of the UNC Asheville women's tennis team have been awarded with a total of four Big South Conference postseason honors for their accomplishments on the 2019 season.
The league office made the official announcement on Monday, April 15, 2019.
Lize Alet Morkel was named Freshman of the Year in the Big South Conference as well as being named first-team All-Conference in singles. Morkel and teammate Taylor Love were named second-team All-Conference in doubles, and Emily Sidor was awarded for her work in the classroom in addition to her work on the court by being named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team.
Morkel received weekly honors from the Big South four times this season. She was named as the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week twice in the 2019 season (Jan. 23 and March 20), as well as Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week twice (Feb. 6 and April 10). She ended her freshman regular season with a 13-2 record in singles and an 11-3 record in doubles. Morkel played all of her singles matches at No. 1. She finished in fourth place out of everyone in the Big South in singles victories and was in second place in singles victories at No. 1 singles.
Morkel is the first Bulldog in program history to be named Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year.
Taylor Love and Morkel were partnered together for most of the season in doubles. The duo was 6-3 overall and had a .667 winning percentage. Love and Morkel played most of their matches at No. 1 doubles where they had a 3-3 record. Love also had five singles victories on the season.
Emily Sidor sports an impressive 3.84 grade-point average as an Accounting major. This is now her second Big South Conference All-Academic Team award as she previously received the honor in the 2018 season. This season, Sidor has nine wins in singles and has been one of the most versatile competitors for the Bulldogs as she has played in the No. 2-4 flights. She is a perfect 3-0 at No. 3 and 1-0 at No. 4 singles. In doubles, Sidor has six wins on the season and has played at No. 1-2 doubles.
The UNC Asheville women's tennis team was awarded the seventh seed in the upcoming 2019 Big South Women's Tennis Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting that will be held April 16-19 at Radford University.
As the seventh seed, UNC Asheville women's tennis opens the championship by taking on 10th-seeded Hampton at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16.
UNC Asheville enters the 2019 Big South Women's Tennis Championship in the midst of a two-match winning streak. The Bulldogs finished the regular season 8-8 overall and 3-6 in Big South play. The Bulldogs were an impressive 8-2 at home on the season.
