Bulldogs Close Regular Season With Win Over USC Upstate

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's tennis team closed out the regular season portion of their schedule with a 4-3 win over the Spartans of USC Upstate at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improved to 8-8 on the season and 3-6 in the Big South Conference after Wednesday's victory.
The match began with the Spartans (2-18, 1-7) taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
The Bulldogs answered back with two quick singles victories at No. 1 and No. 2. The reigning Freshman of the Week in the Big South Conference, Lize Alet Morkel, won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. Emily Sidor put UNC Asheville ahead with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2.
Christin Louw grabbed the third victory of the day for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3.
USC Upstate responded by taking the matches at No. 5 and No. 6 to tie things up at 3-3.
Lauren Watson-Steele dropped the first set at No. 4, 7-5, before fighting back to dominate the next two sets. Watson-Steele won set two, 6-2, and took set three with ease, 6-0, to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Bulldogs.
Next on the schedule for the Bulldogs is the Big South Conference Tournament. The 2019 Big South Women's Tennis Championship will be held April 16-19 on the campus of Radford University in Radford, Va.
