ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team picked up their third Big South Conference win of the season by defeating USC Upstate, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
"It is always nice to get a win," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "5-2 against what I think is a very underrated team. Their results this year don't reflect the level that they are capable of playing at. We certainly didn't play our best doubles point and they snuck it out from underneath us. I was pleased with the way the guys responded in singles. We took five out of the six there which is good. I think that is a testament to the depth that we have this year, which is a luxury that we haven't had in the past. 5-2 final, I'll take that every time."
The Bulldogs (16-2, 3-0) dropped the doubles point to the Spartans (1-12, 0-4). UNC Asheville responded in singles with wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6.
After facing a 0-1 deficit at the conclusion of doubles, Henry Patten, at No. 1, and Leo Bierbaum, at No. 6, each responded with two quick victories to put the Bulldogs up 2-1.
Charlie Morkel gave UNC Asheville their third win with a three-set thriller at No. 5. Morkel won his first set with ease with a 6-1 score before dropping set two 6-3. The sophomore would have no trouble in his third set as he claimed a 6-2 victory to put the Bulldogs up.
Sirawit Daosaengsawang came from behind in his first set to claim a 6-3 victory. Set two would be a battle as Daosaengsawang would once again find himself down before claiming a 7-6 victory in a tiebreak to clinch the win for the Bulldogs.
Oli Nolan dropped his first set before winning set two and set three to pick up his tenth win of the season and give UNC Asheville the 5-2 victory.
Next the Bulldogs will hit the road for a weekend road trip. First, they will face off with Campbell on Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m., before traveling to Farmville, Va. for a matchup with Longwood on Sunday, March 31 at 11 a.m.
