Women's Tennis To Play Two Conference Road Matches This Weekend

FARMVILLE, Va. – UNC Asheville women's tennis will hit the road for two Big South Conference matchups March 23-24 versus Longwood and Campbell.
First, the Bulldogs will travel to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood on Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m., before traveling to Buies Creek, N.C. for a matchup with Campbell on Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs are 6-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Big South Conference.
BULLDOG BITES
Last Time Out
The Bulldogs faced off against Big South Conference rival Charleston Southern on Wednesday, March 13, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown. The Bulldogs picked up their first conference win of the season and their first win over the Buccaneers since the 2009 season with a 4-3 victory.
The Bulldogs took the doubles point on the heels of an amazing comeback effort by Kylee Shipley and Lauren Watson-Steele at No. 3. The duo found themselves in a 4-1 hole before fighting to erase the deficit and pick up a 6-4 victory.
UNC Asheville had to fight for every point versus the Buccaneers, who answered back with two quick singles victory to erase the Bulldogs lead. Lize Alet Morkel tied the match for the Bulldogs with a win at No. 1.
Shipley, at No. 5, and Taylor Love, at No. 3, each had to fight through three back and forth sets to claim the essential third and fourth wins for the Bulldogs to clinch the 4-3 victory.
Breakout Bulldogs
Lize Alet Morkel, Taylor Love and Emily Sidor all have at least five singles wins this season in the Bulldogs' ten matches.
Freshman standout Morkel is 8-1 on the season and has played all of her matches at No. 1 singles. Love is 5-3 and has played at No. 3-5, while Sidor is 5-4 and has played all but two of her matches at No. 2.
In doubles, Love has teamed up with Morkel for all of her matches and put together an impressive spring already with six wins in eight tries.
Morkel has won eight of ten doubles matches on the season, playing with Love for six, Sidor for one and Lauren Watson-Steele for one.
Sidor has six doubles wins, partnering with Christin Louw for all but one.
Scouting Longwood
Longwood is 8-3 overall on the season. They are 0-2 in the Big South Conference after dropping their conference opener to Winthrop last weekend and falling 4-3 to Radford on March 20. The Lancers will host Campbell for their first home match of the season on Friday, March 22 before their matchup with the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Scouting Campbell
Campbell is 8-9 on the season. They are 2-3 in the Big South Conference with wins over USC Upstate and Charleston Southern. The last three matches for the Fighting Camels have resulted in a loss to Winthrop at home, a loss to Presbyterian on the road and a loss to Gardner-Webb on the road. Campbell will face Longwood on the road on Friday, March 22, before hosting the Bulldogs on Sunday.

The Bulldogs will play two more conference road matches in the next two weeks before returning home. They will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a Battle of the Bulldogs matchup with Gardner-Webb on Thursday, March 28, at 2 p.m. On Wednesday, April 3, UNC Asheville will head to Clinton, S.C. to face off with Presbyterian at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs next home match is scheduled to take place on April 6, at 10 a.m. versus Hampton, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
