BOCA RATON, Fla. – UNC Asheville men's tennis picked up a neutral site win over Boston University on Friday, March 15, for their final non-conference match of the season.
This is the Bulldogs second neutral site win of the season and their seventh road win. The Bulldogs are now 13-2 overall on the season.
"We came out flat in doubles today," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "They did a good job punishing us for it, but the guys responded well at singles and took some early leads. Quinn Fender did a great job in turning his match around to clinch it for us at No. 6. It's been a fantastic trip down here in Florida and I know we are a better team because of it. We'll take a few days off now before we get into our conference schedule next weekend."Â
Boston University took the early advantage by winning the doubles point. The Terriers got two 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to down the Bulldogs and take a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Oli Nolan evened the match for the Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2. Charlie Morkel, at No. 4, gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Henry Patten continued his success with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 to make the score 3-1. Â
Freshman Quinn Fender, playing at No. 6, dropped his first set 6-4, but dominated set two 6-1 to force the decisive third set. Fender would clinch the match for the Bulldogs with a 6-2 set three victory for UNC Asheville's 13th win of the season.
Boston University would win the matches at No. 3 and No. 5 for the 4-3 final score. Â
Next the Bulldogs will open their Big South Conference season when they host Radford at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown on Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m. A day later UNC Asheville will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for a conference matchup versus Winthrop at 1 p.m.
