Box Score
ASHEVILE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's tennis team defeated Charleston Southern for their first Big South Conference win of the season on Wednesday, March 13, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
"I'm really pleased with that win," UNC Asheville women's tennis head coach Lise Gregory said. "It's nice when the team does everything right and they finally get the reward for doing everything right. These girls have been working really hard and doing everything they can to be successful. We've had our challenges this semester and it's really nice for them to see the fruits of those challenges, so I'm pleased with this team and I'm proud of them."
The Bulldogs' win was their first over Charleston Southern since the 2009 season. The Buccaneers had won nine straight matchups with UNC Asheville before Wednesday's Bulldog win.
In doubles, UNC Asheville's Lize Alet Morkel and Taylor Love picked up their sixth win of the season at No. 1, just before the Buccaneers tied things up with a win at No. 2.
Charleston Southern jumped out to an early 4-1 lead at No. 3 and had the doubles point within grasp, but UNC Asheville's Kylee Shipley and Lauren Watson-Steele would not go away. Shipley and Watson-Steele mounted an amazing comeback and won the match at No. 3, 6-4, to give the Bulldogs a much-needed 1-0 early lead.
The Buccaneers jumped out early in singles by taking the matches at No. 4 and No. 6 to swing the momentum in their favor. Morkel managed to tie things up for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1.
With the match all tied up 2-2, both teams were scrambling to bring the momentum back their direction with an important third victory. Love, at No. 3, and Emily Sidor, at No. 2, both dropped their first set, seemingly giving the Buccaneers an advantage, but both answered with set two victories to even things out once again and force a decisive third set.
Shipley, at No. 5, picked up a 6-2 win in her first set, before dropping set two, 6-0. In the third set, Shipley and Charleston Southern's Tiffany Pyritz traded games back and forth until the set was tied 3-3. That is all Shipley would allow as she won three more games for the 6-3, third set victory to bring the momentum back the Bulldogs' way with a 3-2 match lead.
Love, fueled by the now 3-2 lead and her own set two victory, would carry the momentum to the finish line as she picked up a 6-4 win to claim the match victory for the Bulldogs. Charleston Southern would take the match at No. 2 for the 4-3 final score.Â
The Bulldogs will now take a day off before they head to Kennesaw, Ga. to face Kennesaw State on Friday, March 15, at 2 p.m.
