Late Run Leads Charleston Southern Past UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A late run by Charleston Southern allowed the Buccaneers to pick up an 85-75 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville men's basketball at Kimmel Arena on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019.
Just under seven minutes into the game, Charleston Southern (11-12, 5-5 Big South) had a one-point lead over UNC Asheville (3-22, 1-10 Big South) at 10-9, but a big run by the Bulldogs allowed Asheville to take a 20-13 lead after a Coty Jude layup with 8:33 left in the opening half of action.
The two teams would be tied at 23-all with 6:25 remaining in the first half.
Asheville and Charleston Southern would trade buckets over the next minutes, but the Bulldogs would own a 31-27 lead after a Tajion Jones three-pointer with two and half to play in the first stanza.
UNC Asheville would go on to take a 34-33 lead into the halftime break.
Jones led the Bulldogs in the first half with nine points. The Bulldogs shot 37.5 percent (12-of-32) as a team in the first half. Charleston Southern closed the first half shooting 38.5 percent (10-of-26) as a team.
The second half would begin with Charleston Southern extending its lead to eight points at 50-42, but the Bulldogs would battle their way back into things over the next few minutes with things all tied at 58-58 with 8:10 left in the contest.
The Bulldogs were down just two at 65-63 with 6:13 to play in the game, but that would prove to be as close as Asheville could get with Charleston Southern eventually earning the 10-point win.
UNC Asheville shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) in the game as a team, while Charleston Southern shot 53.8 percent (28-of-52). The Buccaneers shot 69.2 percent (18-of-26) in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) as a team in the second stanza.
Three Bulldogs finished in double figures with LJ Thorpe scoring a career-best 24 points. He also had two steals, one assist and one rebound.
Baker finished his day with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He also had one rebound, one assist and one steal. The final Bulldog in double figures was Jones with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also had two steals, one assist and one rebound.
Christian Keeling of Charleston Southern led all in the game with 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

Career Day for Thorpe
In just his second game back from an injury suffered at Winthrop on Jan. 21, LJ Thorpe picked up his first 20-point game as a Bulldog with his career-best 24 points against Charleston Southern. Thorpe was 9-of-11 from the field in the game. He scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half.
