Bulldogs Pick Up Road Win to Complete Season Sweep of USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Asheville men's basketball secured its first road win of the season with a 57-53 Big South victory at USC Upstate on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019.
The game featured six ties and 14 lead changes.
With just over 14 minutes left in the first half, USC Upstate (6-21, 1-11 Big South) held a slight 6-5 advantage over the Bulldogs, but a 12-0 run allowed Asheville (4-22, 2-10 Big South) to go ahead 17-8 with 10:06 left in the first half. Shortly thereafter an 8-0 run by the Spartans pulled USC Upstate back to within one at 17-16.
The two teams were all tied up at 19-all with 5:30 left in the opening half of action.
The Bulldogs would lead 26-23 with under two minutes left in the first half, but the Spartans would go on to take a 28-26 lead into intermission.
UNC Asheville closed out the first half shooting 35.7 percent (10-of-28) as a team. USC Upstate shot 37 percent (10-of-27) in the first half as a team.
DeVon Baker led the Bulldogs in the first half with 10 points.
The second half was close all the way with the game tied at 45-all with 6:04 left in the game. The game was tied once again at 50-50 with exactly three minutes to play in the contest.
The Bulldogs from there would hold the lead the rest of the way with Tajion Jones knocking down a three-pointer with 2:30 to go in the game and then less than a minute later punctuating a 5-0 Bulldog run with a fast-break dunk.
UNC Asheville closed out the second half shooting 41.4 percent (12-of-29). The Bulldogs shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) as a team in the game.
The Bulldogs limited USC Upstate to 31.8 percent (7-of-22) as a team in the second half. The Spartans shot 34.7 percent (17-of-49) for the game.
Jones led two Bulldogs in double figures with 17 on 7-of-13 shooting. He also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Baker ended his efforts with 16 points, two assists and two steals.
Two Spartans ended the night in double figures with Deion Holmes leading the way with a game-high 18 points.

The Bulldogs had a season-low six turnovers in the road win over USC Upstate. The Bulldogs only had one turnover in the second half. UNC Asheville scored 12 points off turnovers.
Season Sweep
With its road win over USC Upstate, UNC Asheville collected a Big South sweep over the Spartans. In addition to its 57-53 win over USC Upstate in Spartanburg, the Bulldogs also picked up the win in their first-ever league meeting with the Spartans in a 71-62 victory over USC Upstate at Kimmel Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
Getting After It
UNC Asheville picked up 14 of its 33 rebounds in the game on the offensive glass. The Bulldogs had 12 second-chance points and 20 points in the paint in the contest.

UNC Asheville will next have eight days off before welcoming Gardner-Webb to Kimmel Arena for the second edition of the "Battle of the Bulldogs" of the 2018-19 season. The first chapter of the season resulted in Gardner-Webb narrowly holding off UNC Asheville, 82-81, in overtime on Saturday, Feb. 2, in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The meeting in Asheville will be the 50th edition of the "Battle of the Bulldogs" with UNC Asheville having earned the win in 15 out of the last 20 meetings. Gardner-Webb owns a 29-20 all-time series advantage.
