Bulldogs Drop Home Game to Gardner-Webb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's basketball narrowly dropped its Big South Conference game to Gardner-Webb, 65-55, on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019.

The game opened with the two teams trading buckets over the first nine minutes with the game tied at 10-all after a monstrous dunk by Donovan Gilmore with 9:05 left in the first half.

The two teams would still be tied at 24-24 with 1:02 remaining in the first half after a DeVon Baker three-pointer.

Gardner-Webb (18-10, 8-5 Big South) would go on to enter intermission with a three-point advantage at 27-24.

Eight different Bulldogs scored in the first half with UNC Asheville (4-23, 2-11 Big South) shooting 34.6 percent (9-of-26) as a team in the opening half of action. Gardner-Webb shot 38.7 percent (12-of-31) as a team in the first half.

The contest would remain close over the opening almost 11 minutes of the second half with the Bulldogs trailing by just two points at 47-45 after an LJ Thorpe layup with 8:53 left in the game.

That would prove to be as close as UNC Asheville would be able to get in the contest with Gardner-Webb holding on for the 10-point win.

UNC Asheville finished the game shooting 39.6 percent (21-of-53) as a team. The Bulldogs shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) in the second stanza. Gardner-Webb shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) as a team in the contest.

Baker finished with 16 points to lead the Bulldogs in the game. He also had four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The only other Bulldog in double figures was Thorpe, who had 10 points, six assists and three rebounds.

Eric Jamison led three players from Gardner-Webb in double figures with 17 points.

BULLDOG BITES

Strong in the Second Half
DeVon Baker scored 13 of his 16 points in the game in the second half. He was 6-of-10 from the field in the second half.

Dropping Dimes
LJ Thorpe tied his career high with six assists in the home game with Gardner-Webb. Thorpe also dished out six assists in UNC Asheville's road game at Winthrop.

Swatting Shots
Jeremy Peck tied his career high with two blocks in the home game against Gardner-Webb. Peck also blocked two in UNC Asheville's game at Northern Kentucky.

UNC Asheville will next welcome Presbyterian College to Kimmel Arena for its Homecoming game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23. The game is part of a Homecoming doubleheader with UNC Asheville women's basketball starting the fun at Kimmel Arena by hosting USC Upstate at 2 p.m.
