Morkel Chosen Big South Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's tennis freshman standout Lize Alet Morkel has been chosen as the Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week.

The league office made the official announcement on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019.

The honor is the second from the league that Morkel has received this season. A mid-year enrollee, Morkel was also named conference Player of the Week on Jan. 23, 2019.

Morkel was a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles last week. All three of her wins in singles came at No. 1 singles.

She opened last week with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gala Castello of North Greenville on Jan. 29. Morkel followed that up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mars Hill's Evan Lake on Feb. 1. In UNC Asheville's team win over Western Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 2, Morkel downed Jordan Strickland 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Morkel teamed with three different partners to go 3-0 on the week. She opened her doubles matches on the week by partnering with Emily Sidor to down Castello and Jhovana Brena of North Greenville, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.

Morkel partnered with Lauren Watson-Steele to collect a 6-0 win over Lake and Haley Steinkamp of Mars Hill at No. 1 doubles on Feb. 1. In the Bulldog team win over Western Carolina, Morkel along with partner Taylor Love bested Jacy Smith and Alexa Webb at No. 2 doubles. 

On the season, Morkel is undefeated at 5-0 in singles. She has played all of her matches at No. 1 singles. She is also undefeated on the year at 5-0 in doubles. She has played at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Morkel and the Bulldogs (4-1) will next take a week off before hitting the road for the first time this season when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face the Spartans of UNCG on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 at 1 p.m.
