UNC Asheville Drops Just Second Home Game of the Season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –Despite leading for nearly 34 minutes, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell late to conference rival Radford on Tuesday, 45-44, for just its second loss inside Kimmel Arena this season.

Game Highlights

After the opening 10-minute session, UNC Asheville held a three-point lead on the Highlanders, 13-10. Sonora Dengokl, who played in her first game since Jan. 22, posted six of the team's points on 3-for-3 shooting. Jessica Wall added five points on two made field goals.

Asheville dominated the second quarter, as it outscored Radford, 13-7, in the second quarter to take a 26-17 advantage into the locker room. Zip Scott tallied five points, while Dengokl dropped four points in the second stanza. Radford was held to a 27 percent field goal percentage in the second quarter.

At the halftime break, Dengokl had a game-high 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. She also had five rebounds, including two offensive rebounds. Scott and Wall each totaled nine points and combined for three assists.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle, as Asheville and Radford combined for 21 points and nine made field goals. Radford tallied a three-point advantage in the third quarter to make it only a six-point deficit, 35-29.

Radford overcame the deficit in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Bulldogs by seven points, 16-9, to claim the 45-44 victory inside Kimmel Arena. Tiffany Wilson was a perfect 2-for-2 and led Asheville with five points in the fourth quarter.

UNC Asheville led for 34 minutes in the contest and was tied or leading for over 36 minutes overall. The Bulldogs also had a 22-5 advantage in bench points.

Dengokl posted yet another double-digit performance with 12 points. She connected on six field goals, grabbed nine rebounds and tallied an assist.

Brooke Jordan-Brown scored four points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. Her 13 rebounds matched a single-game career best for the center. Six of those rebounds came on the offensive glass. The junior also totaled three blocks against the Highlanders.

Wall added seven points, as she connected with three field goals. She also recorded four assists.

Wilson and Scott combined for 10 points and five rebounds.

UNC Asheville falls to 15-12 overall and 10-6 in league play. Radford moves to 20-6 overall and 14-1 in the Big South.

What's Next?

UNC Asheville will conclude its three-game home stretch on Saturday, March 2, as the Bulldogs host Charleston Southern. The home finale will also serve as Senior Day, as the women's basketball team will honor six graduating seniors – Alexis Toney, Wall, Dengokl, Kelli FisherTiffany Wilson and Ali Trani. Tipoff versus the Bucs is set for 2 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena.
