About UNC Asheville

UNC Asheville returns to Kimmel Arena with a 14-11 overall record and a 9-5 mark in league games this year. The Bulldogs have won three straight games and nine of their last 11.

In Big South games this year, the Bulldogs have two players averaging double figures – Sonora Dengokl (17.7 ppg) and Jessica Wall (12.1 ppg). Dengokl has only played in six of the 14 Big South games this year, as she has totaled 106 points in league games. Wall continues to be an offensive threat against league foes, as the senior has netted 169 total points, including knocking down 120 points behind the three-point arc. Nadiria Evans and Zip Scott have stepped up offensively, as they are averaging 8.6 ppg and 7.1 ppg, respectively. Evans has come off the bench in all 14 games and averages just under 18 minutes per contest. Conversely, Scott has started all 14 games and is shooting at a 34 percent clip from the field and a 35.7 percent mark behind the three-point arc.

Brooke Jordan-Brown has continued to be a force on the rebounding side of the game, as the junior center averages 7.2 rebounds per league contest. Out of her 94 total rebounds, she has a team-high 27 offensive rebounds. Jimeshia Lawson is a threat on the offensive boards too, as the rookie has 26 total offensive rebounds in league games this year. Juliet Esadah, who has started the last three games, is shooting 50 percent from the field but is also averaging four boards a game in Big South contests.

Scouting USC Upstate

USC Upstate travels to Asheville with a 6-18 overall record and a 2-11 mark in league games. The Spartans are currently on a six-game losing streak and are 2-13 in road games this season.

The Spartans have several key offensive threats to focus on. Junior college transfer Brianna Lewis is the team's leading scorer, as the guard averages just over 17.3 points per game. Right behind her with an 11.5 scoring average is forward Riley Popplewell. The final Spartan averaging double digits this year is DeNisha Swain, who averages 10.8 points per contest. Michaela Gibbons, who has appeared in all 24 games this season, averages 9.1 points per game, as she is shooting at a 30.3 percent clip behind the three-point arc.

Along with her 11.5 scoring average, Popplewell is a force on the boards, as she has a team-best 8.3 rebounding average in games this season. She has 199 total rebounds – 97 offensive and 102 defensive. Two other Spartans – Gibbons (5.3 rpg) and Swain (5.2 rpg) – are averaging five or more rebounds during the 2018-19 campaign.

All-Time History Versus the Spartans

Saturday's meeting will be the 12th all-time head-to-head meeting between the Bulldogs and Spartans. UNC Asheville leads the all-time series, 6-5, and has won four straight games over the Spartans.

In the earlier matchup this season between the two clubs, the Bulldog offense was led by a historic performance by Dengokl. The senior guard tallied a career-high 36 points and connected on 18 field goals in the 93-86 overtime victory with the Spartans. The 36 points scored is a UNC Asheville Division I record and a Big South Conference record in league-only contests. Her 18 made field goals matched a program record and is the most at UNC Asheville during the DI era. Dengokl also recorded a career-high five assists in 36 minutes of action. Also joining the Sumter, S.C. native with a career day was freshman Evonna McGill, who netted 15 points in just 14 minutes off the bench. McGill went 6-for-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Jordan-Brown nearly earned a double-double, but she fell two rebounds shy (10 points and eight rebounds).
