Bulldogs Hold Off Spartans to Pick Up Fourth Straight Victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball led from start-to-finish in its 56-53 home Big South Conference win over USC Upstate on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Kimmel Arena.
The win was UNC Asheville's fourth straight. The Bulldogs (15-11, 10-5 Big South) are now 11-1 overall on the season at home after the Homecoming victory over USC Upstate.

The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter in the win over USC Upstate (6-19, 2-12 Big South) with Asheville outscoring the Spartans, 15-4, in the opening quarter.
UNC Asheville limited USC Upstate to just 20 percent (2-of-10) shooting in the first quarter. Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs in the first half with six points. Juliet Esadah had five boards in the first quarter.
Things would be a little closer in the second quarter, but UNC Asheville would extend its lead by outscoring the Spartans, 13-7, in the quarter.
The Bulldogs owned a 22-17 lead at the halftime break. Evans added three more points in the second quarter to lead the Bulldogs with nine points at intermission.
UNC Asheville would lead by as many as 14 points the rest of the way, but USC Upstate would battle its way back into things in the final minutes before the Bulldogs closed things out for the three-point win.
Evans led the Bulldogs in the contest with a game high-tying 13 points. She also had three rebounds and a steal.
Honored before the game for setting the all-time program record for three-pointers made in her career, Jessica Wall was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 11 points.
Wall, who after the win over USC Upstate has now knocked down 215 three-pointers in her career, also had five assists and two steals.
As a team, UNC Asheville shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61). The Spartans shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) as a team.
DeNisha Swain came off the bench to tie Evans for game high honors with 13 points to lead the Spartans.

UNC Asheville will continue its three-game home stretch by hosting league-leading Radford inside Kimmel Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the league showdown will be streamed on ESPN3.
