Bulldogs Overcome Early Deficit; Claim 11-Point Road Win at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. –Despite being down 20-12 at the end of the first quarter, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team claimed a 68-57 victory over Longwood on Tuesday night at Willett Hall, as the Bulldogs outscored the Lancers by 19 points in the final three quarters.

The first quarter was tough going for UNC Asheville, as it was only able to net 12 points in the opening stanza. The Lancers took advantage by outscoring the Bulldogs by eight to take a 20-12 lead into the second quarter.
Asheville's offense started to take form in the second quarter, as it held a 15-10 advantage in the 10-minute session. Nadiria Evans and Brooke Jordan-Brown led the Bulldog offense in the quarter, as Evans netted five points and Jordan-Brown totaled four points and three rebounds. Jimeshia Lawson also added four points on 2-for-2 shooting.
At the halftime break, UNC Asheville shot 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from the field without connecting with a three-pointer. UNC Asheville only made one free throw trip in the opening half as well. Evans and Jordan-Brown had nearly half of Asheville's 27 points (13 points).
The Bulldogs netted 21 points in the third quarter, while holding Longwood to just 14 points. Asheville netted six points from the free throw line, as five of the six came from the hands of Evans. Longwood was able to knot the game at 44-all with just over a minute left in the third quarter, but behind a 4-0 Jordan-Brown run to end the quarter, the Bulldogs clung to a four-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Behind five made field goals, including a crucial three-pointer from Ali Trani, the Bulldogs outscored the Lancers by seven points (20-13) in the last quarter. Nine of Asheville's points came from the free throw line, as five different Bulldogs converted on at least one free throw in the final 10 minutes.
In the second half, eight different Bulldogs scored, and of the eight, six scored four points or more. Longwood had six players score in the second half but were outscored by UNC Asheville, 41-27, in the final 20 minutes of play.
Evans posted another double-digit performance, as she netted 16 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Highlighting her night was going an unblemished 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The 16-point performance was the 12th time this year the sophomore has scored 10 or more points in an outing. With her eight made free throws, it also marked the fourth time in the last five games Evans has connected with seven or more free throws in a game.
Jordan-Brown also connected with a double-digit outing, as she totaled 12 points in a nearly flawless game (6-for-7 shooting). The double-figure performance marked her third occurrence since Jan. 15, 2019.
Jessica Wall, who connected with four field goals, finished the night with nine points and three assists.
Lawson added eight points and two rebounds, as she went a perfect 4-for-4 from the hardwood.
Juliet Esadah, who made her third straight start, connected with seven points.
Zip Scott and Trani were the final two Bulldogs with six points or more, as they each made two field goals.
Overall UNC Asheville shot 46.3 percent (25-for-54) from the field and went 16-for-19 (84.2 percent) from the charity stripe. With 16 made free throws, it marked the 11th game in the last 12 that UNC Asheville has converted on 10 or more free throws in a game.
Defensively, the Bulldogs corralled 29 rebounds and earned nine steals. Esadah, Evans and Jordan-Brown led the team with two apiece. Longwood earned 11 offensive rebounds, but the Bulldog offense limited the Lancers' second-chance points to eight.
With its third straight win, UNC Asheville moves to 14-11 overall and 9-5 in league play, and Longwood drops to 3-21 on the year and 2-12 in Big South games.
What's Next?
After playing four road games in the last five contests, UNC Asheville will open a three-game home stretch on Saturday, Feb. 23 against USC Upstate. The weekend contest against the Spartans will also be homecoming at UNC Asheville, as the men's basketball team will host Presbyterian.
