Mathuthu Podiums on Final Day of Big South Indoor Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Victor Mathuthu highlighted the finishes for UNC Asheville track and field at the Big South Indoor Championships, as the sophomore finished third in the men's triple jump inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

Highlights
After her record-breaking day on Friday, Claudia Prieto Alcaide posted a strong finish in the women's triple jump. The freshman made a jump of 11.06m en route to a seventh-place finish. Teammate Asia Washington finished two spots behind Prieto with a 10.67m jump.
On the men's side of the triple jump, Mathuthu earned the lone podium for UNC Asheville at the Big South Indoor Championships. The sophomore made a jump of 14.62m, which placed him third out of 13 athletes.
Two Bulldogs raced in the men's one mile. Sage Turner led Asheville, as the junior finished 10th with a 4:31.50 time. Big South Indoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year Blanton Gillespie finished 16th with a 4:57.13 time.
On the women's side of the one mile, Madeline Nichols earned a top-10 finish (ninth) with a time of 5:24.22.
As the lone Bulldog in the men's 400m final, Tyree McFalling finished eighth overall with a 51.02.
Desire Brown was another Bulldog representative in a final event on Saturday, as the junior raced in the women's 400m. Brown clocked a 58.80 time. She was only 0.58 seconds away from jumping into the top 5.
Three Bulldogs ran in the women's 3000m. Big South Indoor All-Academic member Kelley Coleman led all Bulldogs with an 11th-place finish. The senior clocked a 10:49.01 time. Freshman India Appleton finished two spots behind Coleman with a 10:58.76 time, and senior Megan Brewer finished 15th with a time of 11:05.89.
Zach Boone and Thomas Little represented UNC Asheville on the men's side of the 3000m. Boone earned a top-10 finish, as he ran an 8:48.92. Little placed 14th following his 9:20.62 run.
Brown, Khadeesha Crumbly, Kindra Mingo and Alyx Evans combined for UNC Asheville's race in the women's 4x400m relay. The foursome clocked a 4:04.98 time, as they finished seventh overall.
On the men's side of the 4x400 relay, Denley Joseph, Grant Lindsay, McFalling and Mathuthu ran a 3:30.80 time. The Bulldogs finished seventh in the event.
What's Next?
UNC Asheville will wait to see if any athletes are invited to compete in the NCAA National Championships, which will be held from March 8-9. The two-day national tournament will be hosted in Birmingham, Ala.
