Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at the 2019 Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – To kick off the outdoor season, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Myrtle Beach to compete in the three-day 2019 Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational.
Last Time Out - Big South Indoor Championships
The jumps team highlighted the indoor two-day Big South Championship. On the women's side, Claudia Prieto Alcaide broke a school record in the women's long jump. The rookie made a jump of 5.55m, which bested the previous record by 0.04m.
On the men's side of the jumps squads, Victor Mathuthu finished in third place in the men's triple jump. He made a leap of 14.62m, which gave him another podium to his resume.
Overall, UNC Asheville had six individuals earn their way into the top-5 finishes all-time in program history at the championship meet.
Senior distance runner Blanton Gillespie highlighted the postseason awards for the Bulldogs, as he was tabbed the Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Kelley Coleman represented UNC Asheville with a spot on the Women's All-Academic Team.
About the 2019 Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational
The three-day tournament begins on Thursday, March 14 and is co-hosted by the City of Myrtle Beach and Coastal Carolina. There are 41 total teams competing in the meet. UNC Asheville is one of three schools from the state of North Carolina and the only program from the Big South Conference.
Thursday will only host two events in the men's and women's 10,000m.
Friday and Saturday will house most of the events, including 31 events on Friday and 30 events on Saturday.

What's Next?
Both the men's and women's track and field teams will return to action on March 29, as the programs will compete in the two-day Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, S.C.
