Bulldogs Open Season with 2nd Place Finish at Appalachian State Open

BOONE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2019-20 season with impressive second place finishes at the Appalachian State Open on Saturday in Boone, N.C.
The Bulldog men scored 130 points to claim the second place spot behind host Appalachian State while the Bulldog women just narrowly missed out on the top spot as they finished just half a point behind Appalachian State with a total of 113.
Two Bulldogs claimed points in the women's triple jump with freshman Kathryn Brown earning five points (fourth place) with a jump of 11.50 meters while Claudia Prieto earned four points (fifth place) with a jump of 11.26 meters.
In the men's triple jump, Victor Mathuthu earned eight points for the Bulldogs with a second place finish with a jump of 14.20 meters. Cameron Woodyard and Nick Roberts each earned points for the Bulldogs in the event as well with Woodyard finishing in fifth place with a jump of 13.50 meters and Roberts finishing in sixth place with a jump of 12.81 meters.
Three Bulldogs earned points in the men's shot put with freshman Dominique Partridge leading the way with a fourth place finish with a throw of 14.88 meters. Jack Choiniere claimed the sixth place spot with a throw of 14.31 meters and Solomon McDonald finished in the eighth spot with a throw of 13.53 meters.
Kathryn Brown claimed a second place finish in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.57 meters and secured eight points for the Bulldogs. Asia Washington finished in sixth place with a jump of 1.47 meters.
Claudia Prieto led the Bulldogs in the women's long jump with a third place finish with a jump of 5.58 meters. Kathryn Brown finished one spot behind her with a jump of 5.52 meters while Asia Washington claimed the sixth spot with a jump of 5.31 meters. Freshman Breanna Moore earned a point for the Bulldogs with an eight place finish with a jump of 5.18 meters.
In the men's long jump, freshman Isaac Teasley finished third with a jump of 6.86 meters. Victor Mathuthu claimed the sixth spot with a jump of 6.65 meters while Cameron Woodyard finished in seventh place with a jump of 6.54 meters.
Kathryn Brown and Claudia Prieto both earned points in the women's 55 meter hurdles with Brown finishing in sixth place with a time of 8.79 and Prieto finishing eighth with a time of 9.47.
Nick Roberts finished second in the men's 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.06 and Jeff Blake finished the event in sixth place with a time of 8.31.
In the men's 55 meter dash, Akin Williams took the second overall spot with a time of 6.45 and Denley Joseph finished sixth with a time of 6.61.
Madeline Nichols secured the number two overall spot in the women's one mile run with a time of 5:17.79 and Morgan Costelloe finished in fourth place with a time of 5:43.21.
Sage Turner secured a second place finish in the men's one mile run with a time of 4:31.99. Walker Lezotte finished in fourth place with a time of 4:40.17.
Desire Brown and Raven Thurman each earned points for the Bulldogs in the women's 300 meter dash with Brown finishing in fourth place with a time of 41.29 and Thurman finishing in sixth place with a time of 41.93.
Tyree McFalling finshed third in the men's 300 meter dash with a time of 35.25 and Joel Bowers finished fifth with a time of 35.99. Bryson Riddick was the last Bulldog to claim points in the event with an eighth place finish and a time of 36.29.
UNC Asheville claimed the first four spots in the women's 800 meter run. Alyx Evans took the top overall spot with a time of 2:28.87 while Ava Nkadi secured the number two spot with a time of 2:33.60. Corey McVay finished third with a time of 2:39.45 while Bri Froehling was right on her heels with a time of 2:39.50 that led to a fourth place finish.
Nicholas Teta fnished first in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:59.58 and Alex Haines finished in third place with a time of 2:01.52.
The first place finishes kept coming for the Bulldogs as India Appleton took the top spot in the women's 3000 meter run with a time of 11:17.69. Samantha Decker finished third in the event with a time 11:49.67.
Thomas Little secured another first place finish for the Bulldogs by claiming the number one spot in the men's 3000 meter with a time of 9:05.66. Three Bulldog freshmen earned the three, four and five spots in the event with John Ciprich finishing with a time of 9:16.09, Nathaniel Edwards finishing with a time of 9:38.06 and James Clabo finishing with a time of 9:38.70.
The quartet of Desire Brown, Raven Thurman, Khadeesha Crumbly and Kathryn Brown claimed a third place finish in the women's 4x300 relay with a time of 2:50.16.
Tyree McFalling, Isaac Teasley, Denley Joseph and Bryson Riddick finished in second place in the men's 4x300 relay with a time of 2:23.58.
The Bulldogs will take some time off for the holiday and then be back in action on Jan. 10-11 at the ETSU Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.   Â
