Dengokl, Jordan-Brown Each Record Double-Doubles; Strong Second Half Not Enough as Bulldogs Fall to Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – UNC Asheville women's basketball overcame a 20 point halftime deficit to outscore Hampton 38-27 in the second half but ultimately fell by a score of 68-59 Tuesday afternoon in Hampton, Va.

The Bulldogs made a strong second half push as they chipped away at the Pirates' lead. After scoring only 21 points in the first half, UNC Asheville scored 16 in the third quarter and 22 in the final quarter of the game. The Bulldogs shot 14-37 from the field and managed to force seven turnovers in the second half.

Sonora Dengokl and Brooke Jordan-Brown each recorded a double-double in the game with Dengokl scoring 18 points and bringing in 11 rebounds while Jordan-Brown scored 11 and corralled 13 rebounds. It was Jordan-Brown's second double-double of the season as she also recorded one at Western Carolina on Nov. 18.  

Hampton opened the game by scoring the first four points and put the Bulldogs down 4-0 early. UNC Asheville fought through a tough Pirate defense to tie the game 6-6 with 3:10 left to play in the opening quarter. Brooke Jordan-Brown hit two layups for four points and Sonora Dengokl hit a jumper for two more to even the score at six. The Pirates ended the quarter with a quick 7-0 run for a score of 13-6 in favor of Hampton after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Pirates hit a three to open the second quarter before the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 16-11 Hampton. The 5-0 run was courtesy of a three from Zip Scott and a layup from Jimeshia Lawson. Hampton then went on a run with eight unanswered points to increase the score to 24-11 before the second quarter media timeout with 6:45 left to play in the half.

Hampton increased their lead to 20 to close out the second half as turnovers proved to be the Achilles heel for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville turned the ball over seven times in the second quarter and the Pirates capitalized with 15 points off of those turnovers. UNC Asheville was perfect from the three-point line in the second quarter while Hampton knocked down five shots from three on eight attempts.

The Bulldogs began the third quarter on a 5-1 run courtesy of layups from Dengokl and Jordan-Brown and a free throw from Nadiria Evans. UNC Asheville outscored the Pirates 16-11 in the third quarter but trailed 52-37 entering the fourth quarter. UNC Asheville forced four turnovers in the third and brought in 15 rebounds while shooting 6-17 from the field.

UNC Asheville went on an 11-5 run to open the fourth quarter as they cut the deficit to just nine with 4:37 left to play. Dengokl and Jordan-Brown each scored four points during the run and Scott hit her third three of the game. The Bulldogs managed to cut the deficit to five with just under 30 seconds left to play in the game but Hampton hit free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

For the fifth time this season, three or more Bulldogs scored in double figures. Dengokl led with a season-high of 18 points that saw her score 15 of them in the final 20 minutes of play. Scott and Jordan-Brown each finished with 11 points. Evans just missed on double-digits scoring nine while Amaryah Corpening finished the game with seven. Jordan-Brown recorded her fourth double-digit rebounding game of the season by leading the Bulldogs with 13 and Dengokl was second with 11.

UNC Asheville will open the New Year by taking on Campbell, Saturday, January 4, inside Kimmel Arena at 2 p.m.

Notably
  • Brooke Jordan-Brown has now managed to corral 36 rebounds through the first two Big South Conference games of the season.
  • Jordan-Brown and Sonora Dengokl each recorded their second double-double of their careers Tuesday. Jordan-Brown recorded her first earlier this season while Dengokl did it versus Campbell on March 10, 2017.
  • Jordan-Brown now has 98 rebounds in the 2019-20 season. She leads the Big South in the category.
  • Dengokl's 18 points are the most she has recorded since scoring 21 in last season's WBI matchup with Appalachian State.
  • UNC Asheville led in second chance points 13-2. The Bulldogs recorded 11 of their 13 second chance points in the second half of the game.
  • The Bulldogs scored 26 points from within the paint.
  • UNC Asheville scored 11 points off turnovers in the second half of the game.
  • All three of UNC Asheville's losses to Hampton all-time have been by nine points or less.
