Morkel, McFadyen Win Doubles Championship at Steve Baras Invitational

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Charlie Morkel and Finlay Ray McFadyen claimed the doubles title at the Steve Baras Classic, hosted by Chattanooga, as UNC Asheville's men's tennis team wrapped up competition against USC Upstate, Sunday.
The duo defeated Guilherme Diniz and Leon Roider of Upstate in a close matchup, eventually taking down the Spartan duo, 7-6 (3). Morkel and McFadyen picked up two doubles victories against Chattanooga, Saturday, to give them three total victories and 15 points during the tournament.
Edward Colclough and Quinn Fender also notched a victory in doubles play, taking down the Spartans' duo of Luka Eble and Alexander Muehr, 6-3.
In singles action, Leo Bierbaum bested Eble, 6-3, 6-2, while McFadyen defeated Frederick Sydow, 6-1, 7-6 (6). Harry Thursfield forced his matchup with Fernando Bernardes into a third set after falling 6-0 in the first. He responded in the second, winning 7-5, but could not get past Bernardes in the third, falling 10-6.
Fender also found himself in a three-set affair, as he took his first set against Tom Russwurm, 7-5, before falling in the second set, 6-0. Russwurm would go on to win the match with a 10-3 result in the decisive third set.
The Bulldogs have wrapped up competition in the fall and will take the next few months off before returning to action January 25 when they travel to North Carolina Central to begin duel competition.
