Bulldogs Begin 2019-20 Season Wednesday by Hosting Lenoir-Rhyne

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball will open its 2019-20 campaign, Wednesday, November 13, with a 6 p.m. matchup with Lenoir-Rhyne inside Kimmel Arena.

Wednesday's opener will be the first time the Bulldogs have opened at home since the 2014-15 season.

The Bulldogs enter the season led by redshirt senior, Sonora Dengokl, who was recognized as a Big South Preseason First-Team All-Conference selection. Last season, Dengokl was a Second-Team All-Conference selection despite missing nine games due to injury. The Sumter, S.C. native averaged 14.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game last season.

UNC Asheville, led by eighth-year head coach Brenda Kirkpatrick Brown, was picked to finish third in the Big South in the annual preseason polls, voted on by Big South coaches. The Bulldogs finished fourth a season ago and made their fourth straight appearance in the conference semifinal game.

UNC Asheville also made their fourth straight postseason appearance by hosting a Women's Basketball Invitational first round game for the second year in a row.

This will be the first all-time matchup between the Bulldogs and the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne, a South Atlantic Conference member, ended the 2018-19 season with a 17-13 overall record. The Bears played two games last week and opened the 2019-20 season with a 1-1 record.

  • Redshirt senior guard Sonora Dengokl was named preseason All-Big South as a first team recipient. Despite missing nine games last season, Dengokl totaled a double digit point figure in 15 contests and scored 20 points or more on four occasions. She averaged 14.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in the 2018-19 season.
  • UNC Asheville women's basketball had one of the top 25 team GPAs in all of Division I basketball last season. The Bulldogs cumulative team GPA of 3.505 was 24th in all DI basketball. The Bulldogs also received the honor in the 2016-17 season. UNC Asheville is one of nine schools to achieve a top 25 GPA in two of the last three years and make four consecutive postseason appearances.
  • Head coach Brenda Kirkpatrick Brown earned her 100th career win on Saturday, March 2, 2019, as the Bulldogs upended Charleston Southern, 62-45, inside Kimmel Arena.
  • Senior Brooke Jordan-Brown totaled seven blocks, breaking the UNC Asheville school record for blocks in a single game, in the 2018-19 regular season finale versus High Point. Jordan-Brown closed the 2018-19 season with the third most blocks in the Big South with 45 and averaged 1.5 blocks a game.
  • For the ninth time in DI program history, the UNC Asheville Bulldogs posted a winning record for the 2018-19 season. With its final record of 17-15, the Bulldogs have secured four straight winning seasons (2017-18 - 17-16, 2016-17 - 19-15 and 2015-16 - 26-7) under head coach Brenda Kirkpatrick Brown. The first winning record came during the 1996-97 season (14- 13), and the Bulldogs then rattled off four winning records in a row from 2003-2007 (19-9, 18-12, 15-13, 21-12).
