Bulldogs Run Past Bears in Season Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball took down the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne, 68-48, Wednesday evening in their season opener inside Kimmel Arena.
Redshirt senior Sonora Dengokl led the Bulldogs with 17 points. The Sumter, S.C. native also brought in seven rebounds and contributed with two assists. Zip Scott led the Bulldogs in rebounds with eight. The senior guard secured four offensive and four defensive rebounds in the game.
Scott scored nine second half points to give her 11 in the game. Junior guard Nadiria Evans was the third Bulldog to score in double digits as she totaled 10 points.
The Bears got out to a quick lead to start the game, leading the Bulldogs 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs chipped away in the second quarter with freshman Kai Carter scoring five points in the final four minutes of the half to give the Bulldogs a 25-24 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs nearly doubled their first half points by scoring 21 in the third quarter. Scott led the Bulldogs with seven in the quarter. UNC Asheville had a narrow lead of six at the end of the third quarter.
The Bulldogs put the Bears away in the fourth quarter as their offense found their groove by totaling 22 points and the Bulldog defense limited Lenoir-Rhyne to only eight. Evans led the way by going 3-3 from the field and totaling eight fourth quarter points. UNC Asheville turned the ball over only twice in the second half of the game.
UNC Asheville scored 23 points off the bench and scored 32 points from inside the paint.

The Bulldogs will face off with a familiar opponent, Monday, November 18, as they will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for an 11:30 a.m. matchup with Western Carolina.

- Zip Scott's eight rebounds versus Lenoir-Rhyne is a career high for the senior guard.
- Kai Carter's eight points was the most by a Bulldog in their collegiate debut since Tiffany Wilson scored eight in her first game of the 2014-15 season.
