Bulldogs Fall to Big South Leader Winthrop

10.04.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE – Despite a strong rally in the third set to put Big South Conference-leader Winthrop on its heels, UNC Asheville's volleyball team fell to the Eagles, 3-0, Friday night at the Justice Center.

Seniors Ansley Rooks and Julia Borges led the way offensively for the Bulldogs (6-6, 1-1 Big South), as each recorded nine kills. Rooks added 12 digs, while Borges totaled nine. Sophomore Molly Hackett finished just behind them with eight kills in the match.

Senior Kailey Hackett led the team with 12 assists and had two of the Bulldogs' four service aces on the night.

Defensively, junior Kasey West finished with 14 digs in the match and junior Cecilia Stack recorded two total blocks.

The Eagles (11-3, 3-0 Big South) entered Friday's match winners of their past seven matches, and recorded 49 kills to the Bulldogs' 33 with a team hitting percentage of .311.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, EAGLES WIN 25-16: The first 22 points of the first set were a good, old-fashioned slugfest as both teams traded blows and neither team led by more than a point. The Bulldogs took an 11-10 lead, highlighted by three kills from Julia Borges three from Ansley Rooks and two from Molly Hackett, as well as a service ace from Grace Volk. After that point, however, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run and claimed control of the set. A pair of Winthrop attack errors narrowed the gap to 16-13, but the Eagles would go on two 4-0 runs to put it out of reach.

SET 2, EAGLES WIN 25-15: The second set had a familiar feel to the start of it, as the Bulldogs hung tough with the Eagles in the early going. Two kills by Rooks and Borges and one each by Molly Hackett and Cecilia Stack helped keep the Bulldogs in it, as Winthrop held a 15-12 lead. But from that point, the Eagles rallied for five straight points, and after a service error, would take five of the next seven.

SET 3, EAGLES WIN 26-24: The Eagles got off to a strong start, taking an 8-3 lead that prompted a Bulldogs timeout. The teams traded blows for a while, but the Bulldogs kept chipping away. With the score 22-14, Kailey Hackett spearheaded a 5-0 Bulldog run with a kill, and followed that up with two service aces and an assist on a massive kill by freshman Lexy Cole in her first-career start, and another assist on a Borges kill. The Eagles scored on a service error, but the Bulldogs continued to hold the momentum with a service ace from Rooks and another kill by Cole that made the score 23-22 in favor of the visitors and forced Winthrop into a timeout. Molly Hackett and Borges had back-to-back kills out of the timeout to give the Bulldogs set point, but the Eagles rattled off three in a row to take the match.

The Bulldogs return right to action at the Justice Center, as they host Gardner-Webb in a 2 p.m., conference match, Saturday.

FROM FREDERICO SANTOS
"I think we started very well, but I think we got to a point where we got lost. We forgot what was working well and we went away from what was working well. Some hitters on our team made some tactical errors that made it easier for Winthrop. We played into their defensive scheme, unfortunately. It's Big South Conference play, and we need to learn to play under pressure: that's the bottom line. We have to be better under pressure, we have to learn to play with this pressure, and I think we know that we can beat them. We'll get there, but I think it's still too early to be pessimistic about things. I think Winthrop has had a good preseason. I think they're a very good team, but I don't think we're too far behind. I just think mentally, we got into holes we couldn't get out of."

On coming back in the third set:
"I think that shows that we believe in ourselves and we believe in what we can do. I think unfortunately at the end, it's those details that come back to haunt you, and there's a couple of details where we didn't pay attention and unfortunately the scales tipped the other way."
