Rooks Sets Program Service Aces Record as Bulldogs Sweep South Carolina State

10.22.2019 | Women's Volleyball

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior Ansley Rooks set a single-match program record with eight service aces to help lead UNC Asheville's volleyball team to a sweep of South Carolina State, Tuesday evening.

As a team, the Bulldogs (9-8, 3-3 Big South) recorded their seventh shutout victory of the season and second in a row after defeating USC Upstate, 3-0, last Saturday. The Bulldogs earned a season sweep of South Carolina State (0-20) after defeating the Lady Bulldogs at the Justice Center, September 10.

For Rooks, her eight service aces surpass the seven recorded by Rachel Wells against North Carolina Central in 2013. It stands as the most in a single match, three sets or otherwise, in the 25-Point Rally Scoring Era (2008-present).

In addition to her eight aces, Rooks added eight kills and five digs, and led the team with 16.5 points in the match. Sophomore Molly Hackett reached double-digit kills, finishing with 11 on the night.

Senior Julia Borges also put up eight kills, finishing the match with a .538 hitting percentage, as the Bulldogs hit .325 as a team. Senior Kailey Hackett led the way with 26 assists on the Bulldogs' 36 kills.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-13: South Carolina State jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Bulldogs ripped off six straight points to take a lead they would not relinquish. Borges started the run with a kill and Rooks scored three points with her first three aces. After two points by South Carolina State made the score 17-11 Asheville, the Bulldogs scored seven-straight points with kills by Borges and Rooks. After a couple of attempts at set point went the way of South Carolina State, Borges secured a 1-0 lead in the match on a kill set up by Kailey Hackett.

SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 25-12: Again, South Carolina State got out to a small early lead, this time 3-1. And again, the Bulldogs responded, this time on a huge 11-0 run that featured three more aces from Rooks and kills by Molly Hackett and Lexy Cole. Molly Hackett had four more kills in the set – including on set point – while Borges added three and Cole had her second of the set as the lead never fell below eight for the Bulldogs after the run.

SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-16: The two teams traded points over the first 14 serves. With the set tied at seven apiece, the Bulldogs scored four in a row, including two straight aces from Rooks. With the score 14-10 in favor of Asheville, the Bulldogs scored five in a row, highlighted by two kills from Hannah Spicer and one from Cecilia Stack. South Carolina State narrowed the gap to six, 22-16, but the Bulldogs scored the final three points, with Borges sending the Bulldogs home victorious with two straight kills to close things out.
