Bulldogs Complete Season Sweep of Spartans with a Saturday Sweep

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Led by seniors Julia Borges and Ansley Rooks, UNC Asheville's volleyball team picked up its sixth shutout victory of the season, taking down USC Upstate on the road, 3-0, Saturday.
The victory for the Bulldogs (8-8, 3-3 Big South) also gave them a season sweep of Upstate, as they defeated the Spartans (6-12, 2-4 Big South), 3-1, at the Justice Center to open Big South Conference play, September 28.
Borges led the charge with 13 kills while chipping in seven digs and three block assists. Rooks added 11 kills and eight digs, and tied junior Kasey West for the team lead with three service aces. As a team, the Bulldogs recorded a season-best nine service aces.
Senior Kailey Hackett finished the match with 31 assists – just one fewer than the Spartans had as a team – to go along with eight digs, while sophomore Molly Hackett contributed six kills, seven digs and two block assists.
Defensively, West led the team with 10 digs, and junior Cecilia Stack and freshman Lexy Cole joined Borges with three block assists apiece.

SET 1, BULLDOGS WIN 25-22: The Bulldogs came out with their best offensive set of the match from the get-go, recording 16 kills and a .314 hitting percentage. Rooks led the way with six kills while Borges added five. With the Spartans holding a slim 6-5 lead early, the Bulldogs ripped off four straight points – the longest run for either side during the set – to take the lead. Though the Spartans would tie it up two more times, they would not take the lead the rest of the set. With the Bulldogs up 21-18, the teams traded points the rest of the way, and Kailey Hackett set Molly Hackett for a kill on set point.
SET 2, BULLDOGS WIN 25-15: Asheville took control of the second set early, riding a 7-0 run to a 10-2 lead in the early going. The run began with back-to-back kills from Borges, followed by back-to-back kills from Molly Hackett, and was capped off by a service ace from Kasey West. After the Spartans stopped the run, the Bulldogs added three more in a row, highlighted by two kills from Cecilia Stack. The Spartans never found their rhythm in the set, and Kailey Hackett gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the match with a kill to close out the set.
SET 3, BULLDOGS WIN 25-21: The Spartans roared out of the gates with a 3-0 start, then used a 5-0 run to take a 9-2 lead in the third set. The Bulldogs cut the lead to four, 11-7, but the Spartans again reeled off five straight to bump the lead to nine. Freshman Lexy Cole stepped up with back-to-back kills to launch a 6-0 run for the Bulldogs, who would then narrow the gap to 17-16 with a 3-0 run. The Bulldogs scored nine of the next 13 points to complete the comeback and win the match, led by two kills apiece from Borges and Rooks down the stretch.

The Bulldogs have their final non-conference matchup of the season when they travel to South Carolina State for a 7 p.m., Tuesday matchup. The Bulldogs defeated South Carolina State earlier this season, 3-0, at home, September 10.
