Bulldogs Drop Conference Match at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – UNC Asheville's volleyball team fell on the road against Campbell, 3-0, in Big South Conference play, Saturday.
Senior Julia Borges led the offensive attack with 11 kills, while also contributing nine digs and two block assists on the defensive end. Senior Ansley Rooks chipped in eight kills and seven digs, while Junior Cecilia Stack had seven kills and four block assists.
Senior Kailey Hackett recorded 25 assists on the match to lead the team, and Kasey West led on the defensive end with 15 digs.
The beginning of the first set started well enough, as the Bulldogs (7-8, 2-3 Big South) held a 5-2 lead. It remained close until the Camels (10-8, 4-1 Big South) strung together a four-point run, followed by a five point run. The home team took the first set, 25-19.
With the Camels leading the second set, 21-17, the Bulldogs ripped off four-straight points, highlighted by a kill from Rooks and an ace from Anna Skryd, to tie things at 21. The Camels took the next point, but Rooks, Borges and Molly Hackett recorded kills to give the Bulldogs set point at 24-22.
However, the Camels took the next two points to send the set into extras. The Bulldogs held set point three more times, including with a 28-27 lead, but the Camels continued to respond, and finished the set with three-straight points to win it, 30-28.
The Bulldogs held the lead for much of the early going in the third set, building a 15-11 lead. The Camels would respond with runs of three and four points to take the lead, 18-16.
The Bulldogs scored the next two points, but Campbell went on a 6-0 run and finished it off with their second attempt at set point to win the third set, 25-19.
The Bulldogs return to action next Saturday when they travel to USC Upstate for a 2 p.m. contest.
