Bulldogs Fall in Five Sets at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – UNC Asheville's volleyball team possessed a 2-0 lead in its match against Hampton, Friday night, but could not find a third set victory and fell to the Pirates, 3-2.
The Bulldogs (7-7, 2-2 Big South) roared out of the gates, taking the first set against the Pirates, 25-11. Hampton kept it closer in the second set, but the Bulldogs would take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory in Set Two.
The momentum would shift in the third set, though, as the Pirates jumped to an early lead. The Bulldogs battled back, but the Pirates took Set Three, 25-19. The home team would then go on to tie the match, 2-2, with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
In the decisive fifth set, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and held a 10-9 lead, but the Pirates answered on their home floor and took the fifth set, 15-12.
Three Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills, as Julia Borges led the way with 12 kills and contributed seven digs and four total blocks. Ansley Rooks and Molly Hackett had 10 kills apiece, with Hackett adding eight digs and Rooks picking up seven.
Kailey Hackett finished with 32 assists and eight digs on the evening, while Kasey West tied the Hacketts with eight digs as well. Freshman Lexy Cole tied Borges for the team lead with three block assists.
The Bulldogs return to action with a 2 p.m., Saturday, contest at Campbell.
