Bulldogs Host Radford During “Asheville Soccer Night”

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Greenwood Field to take on Radford in a Big South Conference matchup, 3:30 p.m., Saturday, as part of a home doubleheader on "Asheville Soccer Night."
The men will play first, followed by the women's match against Charleston Southern 30 minutes after the conclusion men's match.
UNC Asheville men's and women's soccer are proud to welcome Asheville City SC, Asheville Buncombe Adult Soccer Association, YMCA of Western North Carolina and the South Slop Blues as part of Asheville Soccer Night.
Members of those organizations will receive $4 discounted admission into both Saturday matches at Greenwood Field by clicking HERE and using promo code AVLSOCCER.
Saturday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+ HERE and fans can also follow the action via live stats HERE.
The Bulldogs (3-7-1, 2-1 Big South) enter the match after defeating Winthrop, 3-0, on the road last weekend. The last time the two teams met, Radford won at home, 2-1, in double overtime last season.
House of Payne
Freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Payne earned recognition as the Big South Freshman of the Week, September 9, for his performances against VMI, and namely, against Georgia State. Against the Panthers, Payne recorded 17 saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.
The rookie followed up that performance with 14 saves against Furman the following week. Payne recorded the first shutout of his young career at USC Upstate, September 28, and followed that up with his second clean sheet at Winthrop, October 5. He has 76 total saves on the season, which is the most in the country and seven more than second place in the rankings.
Offensive Attack
Junior Tyson Hichman has been the go-to man in the early part of the season, leading the way with four goals scored. His four goals already equal the Bulldogs' individual team-high of four scored by Izaiah Vignali last season.
Sophomore Nate Evans has come on strong as of late, scoring the game winner in each of the past two Saturday road conference matches. His goal against USC Upstate proved to be the only one of the match, and he scored the first of three for the Bulldogs against Winthrop, last Saturday.
As a team, the Bulldogs scored three goals at home against High Point, October 2, in a 4-3 defeat before taking down Winthrop, 3-0. It was the first time since 2010 the Bulldogs had scored three goals in consecutive games.
In addition to Hichman and Evans, Vignali, Kyle Adams, Colin Daughtry, Frank Morales, Andrew Rossetti and Dino Dziergas have each recorded a goal for the Bulldogs, while Adams and Dziergas lead the way with two assists apiece.
Real Men Wear Pink
Head coach Mathes Mennell will be wearing a pink polo and pink shoelaces during home matches in the month of October as part of the American Cancer Society's "Real Men Wear Pink Campaign" that gathers community leaders to help raise awareness and money to battle breast cancer. The Highlanders are 2-7-2 on the season and 0-3 in Big South play. They enter the match after losing to Presbyterian. 1-0, Wednesday. They have yet to win a match away from home this season.
Amadou Macky Diop leads the Highlanders in scoring with four goals on the season, while Octavio Ocampo and Mouhameth Thiam each have two goals and two assists. Pape Oumar Gueye leads the team with five assists.
Two goalkeepers have started for Radford this season, with Joseba Incera starting nine matches and recording 24 saves while allowing 15 goals.
