UNC Asheville Women’s Tennis Hosts Mars Hill and Western Carolina This Weekend

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's tennis will close out its five-match homestand to start the 2019 season with two matches at home this weekend at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
UNC Asheville (2-1) will first play host to Mars Hill at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, before hosting Mountain Rival Western Carolina at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Both matches will be played indoors.

Last Time Out
UNC Asheville women's tennis picked up its second victory of the 2019 season with a 6-1 victory over North Greenville on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
UNC Asheville started the match by easily sweeping the doubles point from North Greenville. The Bulldogs only dropped one game at all three doubles flights en route to the collecting the doubles point.
The Bulldogs would go on to win all five of the singles flights in which they competed in straight sets. Asheville did not field a player at No. 6 singles to give the Crusaders their lone point.
Morkel Named Big South Player of the Week
Less than two weeks after she arrived on campus as a mid-year enrollee, UNC Asheville women's tennis freshman Lize Alet Morkel was chosen as the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019.
The Western Cape, South Africa native closed out her first week in a Bulldog uniform by going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Morkel opened the year with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Iulia Ponomareva of Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, Jan. 18. She followed that up with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Megan Scholvinck of Davidson on Sunday, Jan. 20.
In doubles, Morkel teamed with Taylor Love to go 2-0 at No. 3 doubles. Morkel and Love downed Gemma Southwick and Diana Babinets of Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-4, before earning a 6-2 win over Alyssa Hahn and Gabrielle Centenari of Davidson.
Morkel picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over North Greenville's No. 1 Gala Castello to enter the upcoming weekend a perfect 3-0 in singles. She is also 3-0 in doubles.
Scouting Mars Hill and Western Carolina
Mars Hill is presently 6-1 on the season. Kat Horner leads the Lions at a perfect 7-0 in singles. Western Carolina will be playing its first match of the 2019 season against the Bulldogs.
