Women’s Tennis Hosts North Greenville on Tuesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's tennis continues its five-match homestand to start the spring season by welcoming North Greenville to the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The match against the Crusaders will be played indoors.

BULLDOG BITES

About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville women's tennis opened its 2019 spring season with a 5-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bulldogs dropped their next match to Davidson to enter the match with North Greenville at 1-1 on the year.

Lize Alet Morkel leads the Bulldogs with a perfect 2-0 record in singles. Morkel and doubles partner Taylor Love are a perfect 2-0 in doubles.

Morkel Named Big South Player of the Week
Less than two weeks after she arrived on campus as a mid-year enrollee, UNC Asheville women's tennis freshman Lize Alet Morkel was chosen as the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019. 

The Western Cape, South Africa native closed out her first week in a Bulldog uniform by going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Morkel opened the year with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Iulia Ponomareva of Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, Jan. 18. She followed that up with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Megan Scholvinck of Davidson on Sunday, Jan. 20.

In doubles, Morkel teamed with Taylor Love to go 2-0 at No. 3 doubles. Morkel and Love downed Gemma Southwick and Diana Babinets of Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-4, before earning a 6-2 win over Alyssa Hahn and Gabrielle Centenari of Davidson. 

Scouting the Crusaders
North Greenville makes its way to Asheville owning a 1-4 overall record on the season. Fernanda de Lucca leads the Crusaders with three wins in singles. All three of her wins have come at No. 3 singles. North Greenville's Jhovana Brena and Lizeth Medina Diaz are 3-2 for the Crusaders at No. 2 doubles.

UNC Asheville will next open the month of February by playing host to Mars Hill at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. The Bulldogs one day later at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, will welcome Mountain Rival Western Carolina to the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
