Morkel Named Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Less than two weeks after she arrived on campus as a mid-year enrollee, UNC Asheville women's tennis freshman Lize Alet Morkel has been chosen as the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week. 

The league office made the official announcement on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019. 

The Western Cape, South Africa native closed out her first week in a Bulldog uniform by going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Morkel opened the year with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Iulia Ponomareva of Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, Jan. 18. She followed that up with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Megan Scholvinck of Davidson on Sunday, Jan. 20.

In doubles, Morkel teamed with Taylor Love to go 2-0 at No. 3 doubles. Morkel and Love downed Gemma Southwick and Diana Babinets of Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-4, before earning a 6-2 win over Alyssa Hahn and Gabrielle Centenari of Davidson. 

UNC Asheville women's tennis will next welcome North Greenville to the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
