Jones and Edoka Post Double-Figure Outputs in Road League Loss at Winthrop

01.21.2019 | Men's Basketball

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Tajion Jones and Stephen Edoka both finished in double figures in UNC Asheville's 66-45 Big South Conference loss to Winthrop on Monday, January 21, 2019.

The game opened with Winthrop (13-6, 5-1 Big South Conference) scoring the first 13 points before UNC Asheville (2-18, 0-6 Big South Conference) scored its first bucket of the game with 11:34 left in the first half.

The Eagles would go ahead by as many as 19 in the first half, but 11 straight points from Tajion Jones pulled the Bulldogs back to within eight at 23-15 with under five minutes left in the first half.

The Bulldogs would go on to hold the Eagles without a field goal for over five minutes and would be down just six after a Stephen Edoka dunk off a beautiful assist by LJ Thorpe.

Winthrop would own a 32-21 lead at the halftime break.

UNC Asheville closed out the first half shooting 27.6 percent (8-of-29) as a team. Winthrop shot 37.9 percent (11-of-29) as a team in the first stanza.

The second half commenced with the Eagles narrowly outscoring the Bulldogs 14-9 over the first almost eight minutes of the half to own a 46-30 advantage.

That would be as close as the Bulldogs would be able to get the rest of the way with Winthrop picking up the 66-45 win.

Jones closed his day shooting 7-of-12 from the field en route to his game-best 17 points. He also had four rebounds and one steal.

Edoka collected a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the game. He also had four rebounds and one block.

Four Eagles ended their days in double figures with Nych Smith leading the way with 15 points.

As a team, UNC Asheville finished the game shooting 31.5 percent (17-of-54). Winthrop shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) as a team.
