Mathuthu Places Fourth In Long Jump To Lead Track & Field on Saturday

LEXINGTON, Va.
– Sophomore Victor Mathuthu led both UNC Asheville track & field programs on Saturday at the 2019 Keydet Invitational, as the jumper earned a fourth-place finish in the men's long jump.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

Just like on Friday, Mathuthu started the meet for UNC Asheville in the men's long jump. The sophomore finished fourth in the event with a leap of 6.95m. He was only 0.08m from matching the third-place finisher.

Jack Choiniere was the lone Bulldog representative in the men's shot put. The freshman from Charlotte, N.C. finished 20th out of 34 throwers. He made a toss of 13.34m.

Graham Parker paced the Bulldogs in the men's one mile run. The junior finished the run with a 4:33.11 time en route to a 20th-place finish. His teammate Sage Turner finished three spots behind him in 23rd. The Asheville, N.C. native clocked a 4:34.39 mark.

After a successful Friday of competition, Claudia Prieto Alcaide posted a seventh-place finish in the women's long jump. She made a leap of 5.35m, which is now the second-best jump in UNC Asheville indoor history. Teammate Sydney DeBerry finished in 10th with a 5.28 jump, while Asia Washington placed 13th with a 5.25m leap.

Zach Boone posted a fast time in the men's 3000m, as the senior clocked an 8:53.87 time en route to 15th place. Thomas Little finished in 31st with a 9:21.60

Junior Tyree McFalling earned a successful finish in the men's 400, as he placed 15th out of 46 runners. The Wentworth, N.C. native earned a time of 50.53, and he was only 0.33 seconds away from jumping into the top 10.

In another sprint event, Denley Joseph led UNC Asheville in the 200m. The freshman finished in the top 20, as he ran a 22.65 time.

On the women's side of the 800m, freshman Alyx Evans placed 22nd in a 37-person field. She finished her run in 2:25.95. Teammates Corey McVay and Kelley Petroski also had strong outings.

The Bulldogs had two representatives in the women's shot put. Ke'Shonna Gay had a toss of 9.34m, while Julia McAfee posted a 9.31m mark.

What's Next?

The Bulldogs will return to the state of Virginia next weekend, as they will compete in the Liberty Kickoff. The meet will last two days and will begin on Jan. 25.
