Jumps Shine on Final Day of Liberty Kickoff

LYNCHBURG, Va. – To conclude the 2019 Liberty Kickoff, both jump teams shined for UNC Asheville on Saturday, as three Bulldogs posted strong results in the men's and women's long and triple jumps inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

Highlights
Victor Mathuthu was the lone Bulldog in the men's long jump, and the sophomore posted another top-10 finish in the event. He made a mark of 6.78m and was only 0.14m away from jumping into the top 5.
Claudia Prieto Alcaide led UNC Asheville in the women's long jump. The rookie from Spain made a leap of 5.24m, which placed her ninth overall. Asia Washington was the second Bulldog to compete in the event, and the sophomore finished 14th with a 5.21m jump.
In his second event of the day, Mathuthu earned yet another top-5 finish to his career, as the sophomore finished fourth in the triple jump. He made a leap of 14.35m.
In the women's triple jump, Prieto Alcaide led Asheville, as she finished 11th overall. She made a jump of 11.23m, which matches the third-longest indoor triple jump in program history. Her teammate Washington finished behind her in 26th place with a jump of 10.24m.
In the first track event for UNC Asheville on Saturday, three Bulldogs had strong results in the men's 60m dash. Denley Joseph paced the squad with a 31st-place finish with a 7.13. Akin Williams finished three spots behind his teammate with a 7.14, while Lee Goings placed 39th with a 7.19.
Two Bulldogs - Zach Boone and Thomas Little - showcased UNC Asheville's talent in the men's one mile. Boone finished in the top 20 with an impressive 4:28.29 time, and Little finished in the top half of the event with a solid 4:34.44 time.
On the women's side of the one mile, three Bulldogs raced in the event. Freshman India Appleton and senior Kelley Coleman finished 23rd and 24th, respectively. The rookie clocked a 5:33.30, while the upperclassman posted a 5:33.71 time.
Junior Tyree McFalling was the only Bulldog to race in the men's 400m, and he showcased his talent. The Wentworth, N.C. native finished 16th out of 56 runners with his 50.57 mark. He was only 0.39 seconds from jumping into the top 10 in the event.
Junior sprinter Desire Brown ran fast on the women's side of the 400m. Brown finished 14th to highlight the finishes for UNC Asheville. She clocked a 59.08 time. Khadeesha Crumbly was the second Bulldog to race, as she finished with a 1:02.11.
UNC Asheville had one lone runner in the men's 500m - Grant Lindsay. The sophomore posted a 1:13.72 time en route to a 28th-place finish.
Senior Blanton Gillespie paced Asheville in the men's 1000m, as he finished 15th with a 2:43.76. Jack Clemens was two spots behind Gillespie with a 2:44.33.
Freshman Alyx Evans led UNC Asheville in the women's 1000m. The rookie ran a 3:09.32 and placed 12th overall. Morgan Costelloe and Samantha Hirsch also raced in the event and finished behind one another - 20th and 21st, respectively.
A trio of Bulldogs ran in the 200m. Joseph finished 42nd at 22.91, while Williams and Tim Thorpe placed 54th and 60th, respectively.
Junior Graham Parker nearly earned a top-10 finish in the men's 3000m run. The Wilmington, N.C. native finished 11th in the event with an 8:57.81. Sage Turner earned a 9:15.05 en route to a 24th-place finish.
On the women's side of the 3000m, Madeline Nichols led all Asheville runners with an 11:20.33 time. She finished 33rd overall.
Jack Choiniere was the lone UNC Asheville athlete in the men's shot put, and he represented the Bulldogs with a 27th-place finish. He made a heave of 13.89m, and he was only 0.12m away from jumping into the top 25.
In the final women's field event of the meet, Julia McAfee finished 46th with a throw of 9.84m.
What's Next?
Both the men's and women's teams will compete in the Carolina Challenge, which begins on Feb. 1. It will be the Bulldogs' third straight weekend with an indoor meet. It will be their final indoor meet of the regular season, as both squads will prep for the Big South Championships on Feb. 15 and 16.
