UNC Asheville Readies for Carolina Challenge This Weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the third straight weekend, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams will compete, as the Bulldogs will travel to Columbia to participate in the Carolina Challenge inside the Indoor Track & Field Complex.
BULLDOG BITES
Last Time Out – Liberty Kickoff
Highlighting the Liberty Kickoff were the Bulldogs' jumps programs. Sophomore Victor Mathuthu finished fourth in the men's triple jump and 10th in the long jump. Teammate Claudia Prieto Alcaide was equally impressive, as the rookie finished ninth in the women's long jump and 11th in the triple jump. Asia Washington also earned a top-15 finish in the women's long jump.
Juniors Tyree McFalling and Desire Brown posted strong results in their respective 400m race. McFalling finished 16th out of 56 runners, after clocked a 50.57 time, and Brown finished 14th with a time of 59.08.
Senior Blanton Gillespie added another top-15 finish for UNC Asheville. He raced in the 1000m, and he finished 15th with a 2:43.76. Jack Clemens finished two spots behind his teammate with a 2:44.33 time.
Alyx Evans clocked an impressive time in the women's 1000m, as the rookie ran a 3:09.32 and placed 12th overall.
Graham Parker nearly earned a top-10 finish in the men's 3000m. The Wilmington, N.C. native finished 11th overall with an 8:57.81 time.
Zach Boone and Thomas Little ran fast in the men's one mile. Boone finished in the top 20 with an impressive 4:28.29 time, and Little placed in the top half of the event with a solid 4:34.44 time.
About the Carolina Challenge
The Carolina Challenge is a three-day meet that will be held inside the Indoor Track & Field Complex in Columbia. The meet is hosted by Southeastern Conference member South Carolina.
There are 48 teams registered to compete in the meet, and there are roughly 1,500 student-athletes scheduled to compete in the meet.
The meet began on Jan. 31, but it held events in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Individual track and field events begin on Friday, Feb. 1.
Friday's portion of the meet will start at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw and men's shot put. The first track event will be the women's 60m at 11 a.m., and the men's 60m will follow at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, the final day of the meet, will start with the men's and women's 5000m at 9 a.m. The first field event on Saturday will be the women's pole vault at 10 a.m., and the final overall event of the meet will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay at 410 p.m.

What's Next?
After three straight weekends of competition, UNC Asheville will take a weekend off to rest and prepare for the 2019 Big South Conference Indoor Championships. The two-day meet begins on Friday, Feb. 15 and will be hosted by former Big South Conference member Liberty.
