Bulldogs Travel to Liberty to Compete in the Liberty Kickoff

LYNCHBURG, Va. – After competing in the 2019 Keydet Invitational last weekend, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams travel to Liberty to compete in the Liberty Kickoff, which begins on Friday, Jan. 25. 

Last Time Out - 2019 Keydet Invitational

On the first day of the 2019 Keydet Invitational, Victor Mathuthu led the Bulldogs in the men's triple jump. The sophomore made a leap of 14.31m en route to a fourth-place finish. 

Freshman Akin Williams was strong in the men's 60m, as he qualified for the semifinals and finished in 18th place. 

Claudia Prieto Alcaide was also strong on the women's side of the 60m. She also qualified for the semifinals and finished 19th overall. 

On the final day of the meet, Mathuthu paced both Bulldog squads, as he earned another fourth-place finish in the men's long jump. He made a jump of 6.95m and was only 0.08m from matching matching the third-place finisher.

Prieto Alcaide was strong in the women's long jump. The rookie posted a seventh-place finish. She made a leap of 5.35m, which is now the second-longest jump in UNC Asheville indoor history. Sydney DeBerry finished 10th, while Asia Washington placed 13th.

Zach Boone posted a fast time in the men's 3000m. The junior from Bakersville, N.C. clocked a time of 8:53.87 en route to a 15th-place finish.

Junior Tyree McFalling earned a successful finish in the men's 400m, as he placed 15th out of 46 runners. He was only 0.33 seconds away from moving into the top 10.

Denley Joseph led UNC Asheville in the 200m, as the freshman finished in the top 20 with a 22.65 time.

About the Liberty Kickoff

The two-day indoor meet begins on Friday and will be held inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. There are 35 total teams in the two-day meet, including six members from the Big South Conference - UNC Asheville, Campbell, Gardner-Webb, Hampton, High Point and USC Upstate. 

Friday's portion of the meet will house several running events along with two field events - women's weight throw and women's pole vault. Saturday will be the most competitive day, as it begins at 9 a.m. with the men's weight throw. The first running event on Saturday is the men's 60mH at 9:45, and the final event of the meet will be the men's and women's 3000m at 5:55 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.

What's Next?

Both the men's and women's teams will compete in the Carolina Challenge, which begins on Feb. 1. It will be the Bulldogs third straight weekend with an indoor meet. It will be their final indoor meet of the regular season, as both squads will prep for the Big South Championships on Feb. 15 and 16.
